Is this a intersection in the bay area, flying techinque, quiet way to
land at KSFO or what?
Thanks - Ralph

As I was approaching the end of my Arrival (I want to say the Big Sur2,
because I know *even then* that I attempted to build a real flightplan and
have some charts) the controller told me "..expect the Tip Toe Visual" into
KSFO..
Of course I had NO IDEA what he was talking about..
After a pause of a few seconds, which to me seemed like an awkward pause of
a few minutes, I decided to pretend I knew what I was doing (a classic
newbie mistake in its own right) and replied:
"uh, Roger Oakland, expecting the Tic Tac Toe visual."
The laughter coming over the RW freq from a few pilots and the "LMAO - LOL"
responses on the text freq confirmed that I was a complete newbie who had
just made a fool of himself.
In retrospect - the correct answer (one that as a controller I would hope to
hear from any pilots in my airspace) would have been:
"I have no idea what you are talking about. Please explain."
Sorry for the off topic vignette - the mention of this procedure reminded me
of this classic moment in my life as an online pilot.
Of course as Richard mentioned the Tip Toe visual is one of the three (I
think there are 3) spectacular visuals into KSFO over the Harbor.
To be honest - I wish controllers gave out published visuals more often...
I can pretty much guarantee you that if the weather is clear and you are
flying into LAX from the Bay area you are going to be asked to fly the
Stadium visual (be prepared - its fun!)
The only other ARTCC that I know from experience gives out published visuals
all the time are the good folks in KZNY.
Some other published visuals in the US that are NOT to be missed:
Parkway Vis - JFK (Watch out for those rooftops turning to final!)
Freway Vis - SNA (You can see Disneyland)
Expressway Vis - LGA (Try this one in a heavy - and hope your brakes work)
Stadium & Harbor Visuals - LAX (why use the ILS?)
River Vis - DCA (Spectacular view of the city - a must at night)
Four Stacks Vis - BUR (Fly in Hollywood style, watch those mountains! -
commonly executed poorly, There is a good possibility there are only 3
stacks left)
Roaring Fork Vis - ASE (Great approach and a nice break from the deadly VOR
approach when the wx is good)
Powerplant Vis - PHX (I've identified the Freeway and the river - never seen
the plant itself!)
Note that these can all be flown using default FS2K scenery.
All the approaches should be available from Echoplate or of course from your
local map store.
Have fun!

Thanks for bringing it up. Never was able to "hear" the message. I blame
it on english not being my first language so I don't have to feel like a
complete idiot later on. Just 97% or so, probably... :)
"I thought I saw a..." Saw a what? Then "...that I did"?
Cheers,
