Description:Involves the study of generalized database management systems. The study will include logical data base models and physical base models based primarily on the relational and object-relational models. The student will create and manipulate a database utilizing an established database management system. The importance of data administration and other database related topics such as independence, integrity, privacy, query, backup, and recovery will be covered. Prerequisite: MIS 120, MIS 175. 3 units.

Note. Oracle9iand Oracle Developer (version 6) for Windows XP will be used. Seeinstructions before installing them. Warning! To correct any installation problems (i.e., incorrectly installed Oracle software), you must first uninstall everything and then delete them from the Windows registry. Thus, it's best to follow the instructions.

The study of database systems is typically core in undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to computer science and information systems. However, there are parts of this curriculum that learners find difficult, in particular, the abstract and complex domain of database analysis and design, an area that is critical to the development of modern information systems. This paper reflects on these difficulties and describes an approach for teaching database analysis and design online motivated by principles found in the constructivist epistemology, which helps to overcome these difficulties and provides the learner with the knowledge and higher-order skills necessary to understand and perform database analysis and design effectively as a professional practitioner. The paper presents some preliminary results of this work and reflects on the findings.

This module will give you an insight into the theoretical and technical issues underlying current and future database management systems. You will acquire practical and theoretical competence in database modelling and design, as well as gaining familiarity with modern state-of-the-art database technology.

The intention of the module is to equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to design, develop and manage database systems using modern database management systems. You will get hands-on experience on a selected database management system that is currently in commercial use. By the end of the module you will be competent with the methods for designing, developing and managing database systems and their associated forms-based applications.

Reassessment will be by coursework and/or written exam in the failed or deferred element only. For referred candidates, the module mark will be capped at 40%. For deferred candidates, the module mark will be uncapped.

Business Database Systems arms you with the knowledge to analyse, design and implement effective, robust and successful databases. This book is ideal for students of Business / Management Information Systems, or Computer Science, who will be expected to take a course in database systems for their degree programme. It is also excellently suited to any practitioner who needs to learn, or refresh their knowledge of, the essentials of database management systems.

Introduce the fundamental concepts inherent to relational databases including data modeling - from the conceptual point of view and to a physical implementation, standardization, optimization of queries, data integrity and transaction management, aimed at supporting the development of transactional systems. This course places great emphasis on a theoretical framework coupled with the provision of an extensive practical experience grounded in the use of a relational Database Management System (DBMS) such as Microsoft SQL Server and data modeling tools such as SAP Power Designer. At the end of the course, participants will be able to use these skills to design, implement and query a database, packaging it with a layer of functional, integrity and security constraints.

The aim of this course is to explain students the basics of databases, i.e. advantages of using database systems over using file systems, how databases and database management systems work, how we manage them, how we design databases, how we query databases etc.

Basic skills in computer and information science, allowing the continuation of studies in the second study cycle.

Understanding basic principles of systems for database management. Understanding of database design techniques and approaches. Understanding of formal database query languages. Understanding advantages the use of database management systems brings.
Application:
The use within information system development and development of other computer programs that demand or work with high volumes of data.
Reflection:
Capability for improving modelling techniques, data representation and storing while solving practical problems.
Transferable skills: ability to use domestic and foreign literature, the use of ICT, the use of systematical approaches in solving problems, ability to identification of problems and their resolution, team work.

This assumes the calendar week starts on a Monday. Note that these are a deadline - not a goal - so don't aim for them. It is expected that students start early and iterate on their assessments. Submission boxes are open and allow for students to update their submission up until the assignment deadline.

A separate assignment box will be available for grace period submissions and late-penalty submissions during the submission window. No further submissions will be able to be made to the original assignment box submissions. If there is a submission in the grace period submission box / late-penalty submission box, this will be taken as the submission to be marked rather than the one in the originial submission box.

For assignment 1, 2, or 3: It is expected that you continue on your assignment while waiting a for special consideration application to be processed (unless the circumstances surrounding the special consideration are ongoing). Put in an Ask.mq special consideration and mention whether it is for Assignment 1, Assignment 2, or Assignment 3.

For one of the quizzes: If you are ill, have respiratory symptoms (cold / flu), or need to isolate for covid-related reasons, there are two things to do here. In the special consideration application, mention whether it is for Quiz 1 or Quiz 2.

For the final exam: If you are ill / have respiratory symptoms, or have to isolate due to covid related reasons (even on the day of the exam), or have any other circumstances listed in the special consideration provisions of the university policy, then submit an Ask.mq special consideration request and send an email to the unit convenor. If the special consideration is approved, then you will be notified of an alternate date to attempt a supplementary exam during the Faculty / University supplimentary exam period. Please make yourself aware of when these dates are as they become available.
