Normally I would not consider creating a user list for a project as
young as Simal (it has one known user). However, there are special
circumstances in this case.

Simal is a tool developed for use internally by OSS Watch. OSS Watch is
a JISC funded Innovation Support Centre for the UK Higher and Further
Education sector. The JISC fund a great many other projects and
services. Many of whom are creating project registries of various kinds.

One of the goals of OSS Watch is to assist with the sustainability of
projects funded in UK HE and FE. One of the routes to sustainability
that we encourage people to explore is collaborative development of core
system components.

Consequently, OSS Watch participated in a meeting recently with nine
representatives of various projects that may be able to collaborate on a
shared data repository for their projects. At that meeting it was
agreed that we would create a mailing list to explore such a collaboration.

Since we agreed, in principle, to use DOAP as the means by which data
could be shared it seemed to make sense to bring this discussion group
to Simal. It is the intention of Simal to work towards providing a
shared repository system for all projects. But first we need to figure
out what that actually means. Hence this list being distinct from the
current simal-contributors list.

Welcome to all who arrive here.

Ross
