Groups vs Roles

So 2.4 comes packaged with the new 'permission roles' feature. Are
these simply a finer grained approach to permissions, or are there API
changes afoot? Will modules/code built to handle groups continue to
work with 2.4 and roles? For the majority of websites where this level
of control is over-complicated, can we simply remove the roles tab and
work with groups as before?
Would be good to have some documentation out the door well before 2.4
is released so community modules can be updated in time.

The permissions system didn't really change much
since 2.3 - the new PermissionRole class is just a
helper to group these instead of re-applying the same
set of permissions to multiple groups.
The UI is a bit alpha at the moment, we're hoping
to change this until 2.4 stable:

There's good docs on groups and roles in a PDF found inside the
workflow module :)
It's written in plain english, too!
