I wanted to give an update on the Signal Peak race course conditions.

At the moment, the entire course is rideable except for Black Peak Trail. That said, “rideable” doesn’t necessarily mean enjoyable. With so little traffic, much of the trail has become overgrown with grasses that are hiding rocks and this makes it a bit difficult to read and slow going.

It was never the most enjoyable race course to begin with, and in its current condition it’s hard to recommend unless you’re specifically looking to punish yourself on what is, at best, a mediocre trail experience.

Thanks for the trails updates. It’s great to have this info shared.

And a big thank-you to the trail crews, such as those from the backcountry horsemen, USFS, and NM conservation corps, plus CDT trail adopters and those individuals who just carry some trail tools along to keep the trails ride-able and hike-able. Following the Trout fire, much of the signal peak area trails were devastated. Now all of the CDT from Black Peak to Sapillo campground plus some of the nearby trails have been cleared of deadfall. Some sections, particularly the 6 mile section to Sapillo campground, also had standing dead trees removed before they would fall on the trail, brushing, and treadwork.

That said, these are backcountry trails that are rougher than most of our fine network of front-country trails at Dragonfly and Little Walnut. Whether this backcountry experience is enjoyable is dependent on attitude, experience, fitness, and equipment. I hope more people will ride the rehabbed trails to keep them ride-able.
