In Memory of Steve Timmons

Hi Group,
Some of you may have heard that Steve Timmons passed away during a mountain bike ride out at Dragonfly on Tuesday. Steve rode with Mark & me during the Tommyknocker and we had a blast. He sure loved to ride and he will be sorely missed.

There is a memorial service for Steve scheduled on Saturday, July 1st @ 10 am at the First Baptist Church in Silver City.

I just read this:

New Mexico State Police are investigating a homicide that happened Monday morning. They said Stephen Timmons was riding his bike in the Dragon Fly Trail System off Arenas Valley Road near Silver City when he was shot and killed. NMSP said they believe it happened 8:30 and 11 a.m. Timmons was wearing black shorts with a white stripe on the side, a light blue shirt, and a black helmet and was riding a turquoise bicycle. 

APD asking for help finding April murder suspect 

They said there is no credible information about an active threat but are recommending anyone in the area stay vigilant. Anyone with information is asked to contact NMSP at 575-382-2500, option one.

As much as this is concerning and unsettling for most of us, we must continue to pray for Steve and his family, as well as those investigating this case and our community.  

From what I gather, Steve loved to ride like most of us do and his love for riding and his life was taken away senselessly. 

We can only speculate at this moment what took place or what lead up to this tragedy.  But if there is something we as a MTB community need to address or be aware of, please share.  I say this because I know not everyone on the trails favors bikers and I have had my share of instances where I’ve startled walkers and horseback riders unintentionally.   Just recently I encountered a walker who I sensed had some annoyance and resentment with bikers and in particular; courtesy and yielding the right of way. 

Hopefully we can continue to share the trails with one another with respect and understanding.  

May Steve rest in peace.

Now this is some seriously fucked up shit.  Road rage is bad enough anymore.  An old friend had someone pull a handgun on him while running in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness a few decades ago, but he lived to tell the tale.

Quite concerning and yes, our prayers and wishes are first and foremost with the Timmons family. Our cycling/hiking/running community could honor Steve by assisting and helping the investigation in every possible way.  

I have reached out to a local State Police officer to ask what our biking and hiking/running community can do to help.  I'm hoping that if anyone who was there, 

Monday at Dragonfly, please try to communicate every detail you can think of. 

Chilling to think that I rode out there Wednesday, and usually ride alone. 

Anything and everything will hopefully be useful in aiding in the investigation.

Sunday and Monday details are really crucial, but don't discount other sounds, sights, cars, people, and most importantly, those having past confrontations with

any other trail users.  There have been sightings of a person who is confrontational out there and even, somebody who seems evasive/hiding and/or running off.  

Any description of this person, when sighted, description etc . . . .

Those tips and any others would be greatly appreciated.  If you feel you'd like to have an officer take a statement, I'll get you in touch with one of the 

officers.

I hope the investigation releases some details to the public as they proceed such as:

Was a bullet retrieved (gruesome but important) and/or a shell cartridge?

What type of weapon was used?

Was this a close proximity or long range shooting?

So much speculation about this tragedy it would be helpful to us all to have updates as they become available.

There is loads of information that has to have clearance to release.  Location of the tragedy is still not disclosed yet either.   If anyone has seen anything out of place, please post on the email.  I've let State Police know we'll get them as much info as we can provide.

I’m kind of curious and confused. 2 weeks ago the deputy sheriffs told me “ I just don’t like my neighbors and to stop calling them about “out of place vehicles at the DF. WTF look and tell or just shut up 🤷🏽‍♀️being a female of color they would rather me shut up. I live near the DF i see a lot. I hope we can give/ get more positive support from the authorities.

If anyone has information about a rider out there who claims he is followed/stalked and annoyed by your presence, please come forward with any info.

There have now been a few reports and instances that sound similar about meeting someone pretty confrontational with dark hair, on bike, street clothes

and in different areas of Dragonfly Trails.
