The report was developed with the support of 92 service providers, 64 manufacturers of industrial AM systems, and 19 producers of third-party materials and desktop 3D printers. It documents government-sponsored research and development, collaborations and consortia, and the activities of 110 academic and 11 research institutes around the world.

The report has benefited from the important contributions of 76 co-authors and contributors in 32 countries. Wohlers Associates is fortunate to have developed what is believed to be the largest worldwide network of professional contacts in the industry. This access and trust has resulted in a report that offers an unparalleled window into additive manufacturing and 3D printing.

The 344-page Wohlers Report 2018 includes 36 charts and graphs, 110 tables, and 192 images and illustrations. It also includes more than 160 pages of supplemental online content available exclusively to the buyers of the report.

The report PDF is for a single user and cannot be placed on a server or any other multi-user device or system. You can order a print/bound copy of the report here. More information for libraries can be found here.

The 276-page report was written for executive and engineering management, product developers, service providers, researchers, educators, analysts, the investment community, and others interested in 3D printing and additive manufacturing worldwide.

The report was developed with help from 70 co-authors in 24 countries, 82 service providers, 29 system manufacturers, and many others worldwide. To support the review and analysis, the publication includes 35 charts and graphs, 60 tables, and more than 248 images and illustrations.

Note: To be clear, the 2019 report is analyzing data from 2018. The 2018 report is analyzing data from 2017 showing revenue at $7.34 billion, so it's expected to more than double by 2020. My 2018 is linked at the end of this post.

The 24th annual Wohlers Report mirrors the general state of the industry: Their report grows in page count as does the industry revenue. This year the report is at 369 pages. It is filled with insights and data (lots and lots of data), such as,

One of the more significant developments to me is that last year reported there were 135 system manufacturers (as in the companies that make the actual printers and systems). This year, in the 2019 report, Wohlers Associates tracked growth and sales of 177 producers of industrial AM systems (which are those priced at $5,000 or more). 42 more 3D printer system manufacturers in existence over data reported last year. Again, this is for industrial systems.

The report highlights notable AM-related activities in many industries, including aerospace. The company collected insights from the likes of Airbus, Boeing, Honeywell Aerospace, and United Technologies Corp., to gain perspective on using AM to produce end-use parts. These companies, along with BMW, Deutsche Bahn, FIT, Jabil, Oerlikon, UPS, the U.S. Marine Corps, and others shared emerging trends from their vantage points. Among the trends are knowledge and skills development, cybersecurity, post-process automation, materials development, partnerships, and industry standards.

The report shows that AM increasingly is being used for production parts. Traditional applications have included prototypes, cosmetic models, tooling, jigs and fixtures. However, through surveying companies involved in 3D printing, Wohlers Associates found that producing final parts now represents 33.7 percent of all AM applications.

Another sign of the growth in custom products and series production is the use of polymer powder in 2021, which increased by 43.3 percent to overtake photopolymers as the most-used AM material, the report said.

AM is best suited for short-run production using polymers, composites, metals, ceramics and biomaterials, according to the report. The process typically is more expensive for serial part production than traditional manufacturing methods, such as injection molding, but costs have been coming down and, in certain situations, AM may be preferable.

The report was developed with the support of 98 service providers, 51 system manufacturers, 15 third-party material producers, and the valuable contributions of 80 co-authors in 33 countries. Wohlers Associates is fortunate to have developed the largest network of friends and contacts in the industry. This access and trust has resulted in a report that offers an unparalleled window into additive manufacturing and 3D printing.

The 335-page Wohlers Report 2016 includes 35 charts and graphs, 68 tables, and 322 images and illustrations. It also includes more than 160 pages of supplemental online information available exclusively to the buyers of the report.

Wohlers Associates is recognized as one of the preeminent 3D printer experts in the world. Their detailed annual report on the state of the 3D printing industry -- the eponymous Wohlers Report 2018 -- reveals significant increases in metal additive manufacturing (AM) this year. Investors will appreciate the solid 21 percent growth as the AM industry exceeds $7.3 billion .
