I've recently taken interest into the harmonica and am planning on getting a better jaw harp as I have been playing for a year or two now. However, I am stuck on what key I should get said instruments in, as well as what type. I like the Hohner Echo Harp because it has two keys on it (C and G), but I am not sure if I will like the tremolo sound in the long run. The next jaw harp I get can only be in one key, so that is more of importance. Which key is most ideal for playing western music and folk songs, and is the tremolo harmonica appropriate for the genre or unnecessary/

I just had to look up what a Hohner Echo harmonica is. I would definitely rather recommend a standard 10-hole diatonic harmonica; I like the Hohner Marine Band.

A standard harmonica can also be played in (at least) two keys, depending on whether you're playing it straight (in the key it's pitched in, mostly by blowing out) or crossing it (playing it in a key 5 steps up from what it's pitched in, mostly by drawing in; playing a C harp in G, for example). Learn to produce a tremolo on the regular harmonica. It's very easy and it's going to be a lot easier to have it when you want it rather than being stuck with a tremolo all the time. I would suggest a harmonica in the key of C. If your interest in the harmonica continues, you're probably going to eventually want a full set anyway.

I like Lee Oskar harps for the tone (IMO much better tan the standard Honers). But for the past few years I've switched over to East Top 'Paddy" harmonicas not just for the rich tone but because they have changed the scale in the low section (below hole 4) that adds an important note. Wish I could explain better but that one note comes in really handy if you're playing melodies note-for-note. It gets in the way a bit if you are blowing more than one hole at a time in that lower area.
