Yesterday I committed my new version of the Default-Basic site prototype which can be viewed online at http://www.silkyweb.org/resource/site-prototypes/default-basic/0.1.0/ .  I decided to go with a single column layout with a subdued and fairly neutral colour scheme.  The idea was to create a prototype which was attractive enough to potentially use wholesale, but simple enough to be easily customisable if the user desires.  This is a first version, so if anyone has any feedback, we can refine it as necessary.

Matt.

Nice one Matt that looks loads better. HTML 5 and CSS 3 ftw

The HTML looks good and is w3c compliant although their is a warning about the character code. So you could add
  <meta charset="utf-8">
Also you might want to add viewport for mobile devices E.G.
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width">
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/mobile/viewport_meta_tag

The CSS also looks good. I like how you reset all the elements :-)

You could also add the modernizr for older browsers. I'm guessing you've already come across this and like me think older browsers should just die :-)

Hope that helps, thanks for you contribution
