Paul Anastasio grew up near Seattle, Washington. He started playing the violin at nine, soon getting hooked on popular and folk music. He was fortunate to have been able to study with the inventor of swing jazz violin Joe Venuti, in the late 1970s. Around that same time, he was hired to play fiddle in Merle Haggard's band, touring the U.S. and Europe for six months and performing on Austin City Limits in 1978. After that, he worked four years with western swing band Asleep at the Wheel. Moving to Nashville in 1984, he worked for three years with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers and, later, two years with Loretta Lynn. Paul Shelasky took up guitar at 14 and fiddle at age 20. He has played Bluegrass with nationally touring bands such as Lost Highway and the Good Ol’ Persons With the Rhythm Brothers he spent 5 years entertaining at the original Disneyland and a year at Tokyo Disneyland. He has twice won the California state fiddle championship. Paul has played and taught at Bluegrass and Jazz festivals around the world for the last 4 decades. Tony Marcus has played jug band music and blues with Geoff Muldaur, string swing with Cats & Jammers, big band jazz with the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, weird old Hawaiian and hokum with R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders, bluegrass with mandolin legend Frank Wakefield, fiddle tunes with the Arkansas Sheiks, and honky tonk country with Rose Maddox, to name a few. |
