Pathways to Peace       Masankho Biography

The Corn Likkers are an old-fashioned family band with a modern sound. They play regularly for Bay Area contradances, won awards at BOTMC, took 1st place at the Santa Barbara Old-Time Fiddlers' Festival – where Eleanor won 1st in singing and Lael won 3rd in fiddle – and played at the Grass Valley CBA Father’s Day Festival. They’re thrilled to be playing with a long-time family friend and [strong positive adjective] musician, Masankho Banda.

Each of the band members carries a separate tradition.

Eleanor (banjo-uke, banjo, flat-footing and vocals) learned banjo and ballad singing from her mentor Sheila Kay Adams, a 7th generation North Carolina ballad singer and National Endowment of the Arts Fellow.

Elijah (guitar) has been learning the flat-picking style of Tony Rice from Jason Keiser, a student of Tony’s brother, Wyatt Rice.

Lael (second fiddle & vocals) plays the chording second fiddle style taught by Tricia Spencer, a master old-time fiddler from Kansas.

Ray (fiddle) learned Tommy Jarrell’s fiddling style from John Engle, one of the few acknowledged experts in that style.

Lauren (upright bass) spent years learning and then teaching African dance from and with African dancer and storyteller Masankho Banda.
