Anyone got a square to spare?

Does anyone have a desk that a colleague and I might share to work on
a project for a day next week? Mick's Sydney-co-working space is still
a couple of months away and I need a low cost option to operate from
once a week. Better yet, does anyone have a desk to rent out?

[Lesson Learnt] On my first day out i thought i'd set myself up in a
coffee shop with wi-fi and work from there. In theory it should have
been simple, purchase a few coffee's and i'd have an office for the
day. Instead, I froze my ass off. Plus i drank so much coffee that i
needed to go to the loo every 20 minutes... but what do you do with
your laptop whilst your gone, i'd be madness to take it with you. So i
downloaded a motion sensor alarm for my laptop and when i tested it,
it wouldn't turn off until i yanked the battery out of the bottom.
Needless to say my first day out was a failure.

If anyone knows of space that's up for sharing in Sydney please drop
me a line.

This worked for me ages ago in Adelaide, but there are Writers Centres Inc. I would say in each state - and they cater for impoverished writers etc etc [cue violin here] - and these are great for cheap office space until they discover you aren't quite writing the next Great Novel - my tip..yes ...start something thats sitting on a page so when you zip of for lunch leaves a ALL WORK FOR JACK MAKES etc etc and I am sure they'll leave you alone..

I got 8 months very cheap cosy desk space as I said a few years ago..

What was the film where Michael J Fox set himself up in an high-rise
office tower? Is that an option? Just blag your way to a corner office
in the city...there must be loads sitting vacant at any moment in
time.

Also...libraries/museums often have space you can 'borrow' for a
period of time, but I'm not sure what their internet access is like.
Perhaps we should start an initiative for free wireless hotspots in
all NSW libraries?

Depending on what you are working on the saasu.com (easy online
accounting) guys might have a spare desk at 111 Elizabeth St (next to
David Jones). Seriously sweet office, great design and looks over Hyde
Park. They have been accumulating a bit of a saas ecosystem there now
with partners and stuff. Ask for Marc.

As Pete mentioned, we have some desks at Saasu.com with broadband
available if you need one on an adhoc basis. First day is free so you
can check it out, then $50 per day. If you are a Saasu Subscriber
first two days are free.

In case anyone else is looking for a short term solution, uos.com.au
have quoted me $70+ GST for a whole month (inc internet). It's going
to be hard to argue $3.85 per day but it may turn out to be a dump,
and they seem to be strict about opening hours of 8:30 to 5:30...

Kain,

Not sure about your specific circumstances, but I've always thought of these sorts of cohabitation scenarios as being more about the interaction with the other people in the environment than the $ of the space. After all, you can spend $70/month on a decent amount of 3G broadband now and work anywhere you like; the space is really about the interactions.

Or, at least that's what I'd be looking for, but your circumstances may be different.

I 100% agree with you Geoff, and long term, I would want to be
surrounded by other entreprenuers and digerati ala Y Comb stylin.
Unfortunately, my circumstances at the moment dictate the cheapest
option. I have a wife and 6 month old child at home in a very small
flat - there's just nowhere I can escape to knuckle down and get on
with things (even if it's dreary cubicle land surrounded by suits). I
tried the cafe-with-free-wifi solution and froze my ass off in the
process. My venture currently has no capital, so the cheapest option
is best.

When i get some freelance working coming in and I can afford it, i'll
be looking again to share more serious digs. I'm hoping

But then I might just be swept off my feet by the Saas office layout
and have to find a way to make it happen :)
