I'll be there if anyone is unsure if anyone else will be there.

I've just recently returned from the Plone conference in Budapest and
the python conference in NZ so anyone who feels like discussing that
Christchurch can get 150 enthusiastic geeks doing cool things with
python to give up their weekend and how embarrassing no one in AU has
tried... see you at 6pm.

I can also talk on things related to the presentations I gave:
Functional test driven development and rapid automated deployment of
python apps.
or if you arrive post happy hour I'll just be spouting crap as normal.

How is it that Christchurch can muster a meeting like that and I can't
find 3 other people in Perth that wouldn't mind drinks once a fortnight.

It puzzles me. Is it actualy something in the water killing peoples
drive to innovate? How can the state that carries something like a
third of the countries economic value with just 10% of the countries
population not be full of bright innovators and people with the money
to take a chance bootstrapping something.

It's always confused me how it can be like this. Mainly as it
continues to frustrate my efforts to grow a company here in Perth.

So I guess I'll put a call out to anyone in Perth or any regular
visitors, would you come to a regular drinks/meetup?

It doesn't take much innovation to dig up dirt and put it on ships. WA is a one trick economy. NZ doesn't have the option of being a one trick economy.

Not sure on innovation in Perth. But the numbers you provide is resources driven and not really innovation per se.

I face the same problem in Adelaide. I have stopped thinking about in now though. Online is my social place and the world is there to network. How does it matter what happens and does not happen in the local area.

Cheers

Well said Mark. That is the hallmark of NZ.

And Australia needs to be like that. We can rest on the resources engine to help us in the coming decades.

Australia's top 3 exports,

Resources
Tourism
Education

These are not the hallmark of a developed, industrialised economy.

We need more than that...designed in Adelaide, Made in China kind of things!

actually Suhit, you can soon cross Education off the list, given the way we are diluting our "quality" by selling our brand here to the top bidders:D

right. Not going well on that front.

I think it will sustain may be with a drop of 30%. The unis will be
fine and the small operators will go.

Plenty of activity happening in Perth, driven by the same people who put together barcamp, PTUB, Port80 and run the web industry association.

Bronwn, Myles, Richard - am I mistaken? Is there something more catered for people who are entrepreneurs, rather than developers or part of the geek culture?

Hi Elias and Samual

Most of the activity here in Perth does revolve around the developer
community, but that's where you'll find the innovation.

Samual: you should come along to a Port80 run by AWIA. Alternatively,
drop me a line and I'd be happy to catch up and tell you where we're
all at. :)
