Hey Everyone,

We were in Singapore recently and thought it would be a useful project to share our respective startup ecosystems and how they connect ... so we made a collaborative mind-map. It is very Pollenizer-centric at the moment but we have only just begun.

Do you guys want to contribute? You should be able to edit directly.

Let's make it awesome :)

I was going to update NZ-side but I don't seem to have editing
priviledges ... is there a magic switch?

Depends at what level you want the information.

Some countries are just so huge and populous it's impossible to
get across all the information. Like China. Except if you have
helicopters with radio scanning computer loggers.

Thailand is quite interesting for startups. In many ways and
the economy is growing. They latched onto producing specialty
items such as hard-disks and other parts for the Japanese and
its worked very well for them.

Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore have also had success in
technology/computer startups.

Then, lets not forget the big boys, Taiwan, Japan, China and Korea.

Meanwhile, while those economies have done well in tech startups
and taken many businesses to medium and large, Australia and NZ
have remained largely preserved in Queen Victorias wish. It's hard
to find any reforms happening in lawmaking comparable to true
tech economies such as the USA, Japan or China.

Obviously, subcontracted manufacturing of tech plays a large part
in Asian computer tech. And much of the IP is held in either Europe
or the USA. But new startups, lets call Samsung a startup have come
along and done interesting things.

My selection criteria for NZ startups is
a) aim to be global, established within last 5 years (some I may need
to double check)
b) domain of ICT, Bio/Med/Health, Nano/Mat/
c) I don't include manufacturer/distributor as that is more process
innovation.

I was just browsing this page earlier and thought it could be relevant
if you wanted to connect with other cities globally (albeit only US
ATM)

Reminds me of the joke i heard when i was recently in NZ:
"We all know Kiwis are incredibly patriotic and love their country. But what is the one thing a Kiwi won't do for their country? Live in it".

Heard on a bus to a wedding full of Kiwis, most of whom had flown in from Australia to be at the Wellington wedding - including the bride, the groom and all of the groomsmen ;-)

A quick question on behalf of a colleague regarding funding.
They're web/phone app startup business, Sydney based with customers nationally, 12 months old, they've completed proof of concept on their product, it's live, they've got customers, good feedback and good opportunities for growth but they need funding (something in the order of $50 - $250k) to put towards ongoing product development and marketing to keep everything moving.
I was hoping to point him in the direction of some people that might be interested, I know of a couple of avenues but thought I'd reach out to get a broader list.

Any names would be greatly appreciated, happy to provide contact details for them off list.

Regards,

Hi Andrew, Michael Johnson Associates (apart from being gurus in R&D tax) have a database called "Grant Strategy" that has over 650 Federal, State and Local Grants that your firm maybe eligible for.
Give Melanie Reen a call on 02/ 9810 7211.
Cheers
