Hi Guys,

We are launching our portable standing desk on kickstarter in a couple months (prototype pics here).

I am reaching out to anyone who has hacked their own standing desk and works from multiple locations (a niche market I know :). If this is you and you have a spare 30 minutes please let me know.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

James

P.S. If you know anyone who fits the above description and is happy to talk please let me know as well

One question - is it automatic? I built my own standing desk and used it for not very long before I began to get back aches and strains, so I went back to sitting. Apparently the ideal situation is to change from sitting to standing back to sitting

Hi Xuanyi,

You are right standing all day is not for everyone, especially when you start.

The main benefit of standing is in the movement, therefore alternating between sitting and standing is an improvement from sitting all day. Our desk does not automatically go up and down, saying that it is fully height adjustable, can be assembled in less than 30 seconds and you can easily use a stool. The solution is really suited for someone who wants a portable solution because they move around for work or work from home / hotdesk and need something they can easily pack away at the end of the day. It will have a carry case and weigh less than 5 kg's.

Hope this helps.

James

I made my own standing desk from an old coffee table last weekend. So far so good, my legs and back hate me but I'm feeling the benefits.

I work from multiple locations, but what inspired me to build this one is the standing desks at Spacecubed which I use when I'm there.
My version is not remotely portable, and I very much doubt I'd be in the market for a portable version, but I'm happy to share my experience if it helps.

Thanks Marcus. I would love to chat if you are available. Monday would work best for me, probably best to do a skype. What time would suit?

P.S. stick with the standing, your body will love you for it in a couple weeks!

Thanks,

James

For those who don’t/can’t/won’t use a standing desk, the main problem caused by sitting all day is the shortening of the Psoas muscle. This shortening is the underlying cause of most modern back ailments - and even neck problems and the associated headaches. Psoas is the only major muscle that has no direct antagonist, because in a standing or quadruped posture, none is needed, so none was evolved. It’s only when sitting constantly that Psoas shortens, causing lordosis that then triggers flow-on effects up the spine (mid-back rounding, shoulder problems, neck tension, headaches, etc), and degradation of facet joints, spondylo- listhesis and vertebral joint failures.

If you work in a chair, you should learn to stretch the Psoas properly. I use either the “stork stretch” or lunges, but there are other ways of stretching it (the yoga warrior pose is akin to the lunge and provides the same benefits, stretching Psoas in the rearward leg).

I wrote an extended blurb on this after spending some time researching it (triggered by my wife’s condition; she’s going in to spinal surgery almost as I write this!). This syndrome is widely understood in the medical fraternity but has not been well communicated, and I find that fact rather amazing. I would be very happy if someone with better graphic arts capability than I wanted to produce anatomical posture diagrams to accompany my write-up.

Clifford Heath.

FYI: I've got a bunch of standing desks available that were put together custom for a sales company. It comes with office chairs that go much higher so they can be used to alternate between sitting and standing. Also, the desks can be converted into lower desks... we used these in the Silicon Beach House but we shut down today so happy to sell them for any reasonable lowball offer :)
