Dear All

The other week Piers and I went to IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) Conference in Brighton. Some of you have asked about how we got on.  For fun, here’s my account … (it’s in Japanese, but don’t worry, there are subtitles …).

Yoko and Sumiyo are excellent TSW teachers, I remember well their lessons, unfortunately for me my schedule and commitments did not allow me to progress further. I remember well your personal efforts, willingness, commitment and above and beyond  personal time spent expanding , exploring areas  not covered in class, immersing yourself in uncovered territories. My hindsight reflection:  a student must want to   commit himself to explore a new and different world, together with the assistance of specialized SW teachers  a future goal in mind  will help and any and all students will have the ability to reach all ends of the world.

Dear Laurence,

Watching your video put such a big smile on my face -- it really seemed like you were having so much fun. I was so engrossed by how you were building your sentences and how present you were that I stopped reading the subtitles!

Thanks so much for sharing,

Caren

That could have been the effect of the IATEFL Conference ... OR ... the effect of learning with the Silent Way ?!?!  Actually, it is obviously the latter - glad it made you smile!

I'm actually working on a companion video to this one to show the correction process from my initial attempt to the final version of the sentence which translates as 'Piers' presentation was about the psychology of learning pronunciation' - we think it will be useful to illustrate this process, and the different things that get worked on.

Finally, tell everyone you know who might be interested that they can have this much fun learning Japanese if they join the upcoming free taster classes with Silent Way Tokyo!

Thanks!

Laurence

As I mentioned in the post last week, we've been working on a companion video showing the correction process itself including student commentary (ie me).  We've just published that video.  Check out this webpage:  https://silentway.online/2024/05/11/using-feedback-and-guidance-to-help-students-improve/
