Hi everyone,
I thought we should draw your attention to a new article we’ve just published on our website.  It shows the ‘bubble diagram’ for Japanese, which Fusako Allard created.  It’s already sparked off a whole string of ideas in us … not just how a teacher can navigate a course, but equally what progress can be achieved through a Silent Way course.  Please share any ideas it sparks off in you!

With special thanks to Silent Way Tokyo for sharing the diagram and giving us permission to use it.
Laurence

"The Bubble Diagram" Quite interesting.
Would it be possible to have a translation in English of what is written in each bubble?
Just looking at The Bubble Diagram one sees a clearer perspective being presented not only  on how "The Silent Way" progresses, but also the path the teacher may follow when teaching students a foreign language.
I think we all do something  intuitively similar to "The Bubble Diagram" but have never mapped it out so clearly.
Utilizing  the diagram the  teacher could easily color in the progress being made by the class or by  individual students.
Students could be screened to see where they presently are   and how far or little they  have to go to reach their goal, or the school goals.
This would also be of interest to administrators of schools as they are more interested in  graphics,  and charts.

Nice job, hope to receive more info.

Luigi

Some of them I can do!  To give an idea:

Start from the red one at the left near the 1 and follow horizontally until you get to the first black bubble :

Sound/colour chart -> hiragana chart -> numbers 0 - infinity -> (a) red/blue/black/white rod(s) -> Please take a red rod -> etc
It’d be a lot of work to translate it all … and I’m not really sure translation is the point (I’d rather “stay in the language”), but hopefully this is enough to give an idea?

As you say, there are all kinds of useful things that could be done with this type of diagram.

I tried to zoom in as much as possible, but many characters in Japanese were very blurry and undistinguishable.
Do you have a better diagram than what is in the link?  I wouldn't mind spending time  with  the Japanese language; it would certainly help  me personally.

This is the best I have.  I printed it out A4 and can read most of it with a bit of squinting.  It’s great reading Fusako’s actual Japanese handwriting, rather than printed characters!

But watch out ... there are plenty of kanji lurking around!

Dear All,
Inspired by Fusako Allard's 'bubble diagram' for Japanese, we've produced this 'bubble diagram' for English.  The web page linked below explains a bit about the diagram and how it might be used.  At the bottom of that page is a link to a high resolution PDF version.

The main source for this diagram is Ros Young's manuscript book (in preparation) on teaching English using the Silent Way.  So special thanks to Ros.  Cédric Lefebvre and I are thinking about using a version of this sort of diagram in an article showing how a Silent Way course develops 'from zero to fluency' ... we'll keep you posted on this.  Also, I'm told that work has started on a similar type of diagram for French ...  Hope you find it interesting!
