Thank you, Leslie, for this, written with such love and gentle humor. While I think my folks at BBL will know, I will pass this on to them as well. Such a gift Shakti was to us, to Caleb, and to the world of education.

Dear MAT family

I’m so sorry to be sending you this sad, sad news that Claire just received from Shakti’s niece, Manju. As you may have known, Shakti had been in a rehab hospital in New York for over a year and, when I talked to her about a week ago, she sounded ready to move on. She joked that the rest of the elephant had left the room, but her tail was stuck in the door. She was curious, alert and humorous as always and devoted to learning from her experience of living and dying. But I think she was also in a lot of pain.

Her last words of advice to me were, “Tell your grandson to tell you some stories.”

I hope we can come together to find a way to celebrate her life and share our own stories about her incredible influence on all of us and on the MAT program.

If you see that I have missed someone in this email chain, please pass this along.

Love to you all.

Dear all,

This is to let you know that my Aunt, Shakti, passed last evening at the hospital around 7:40pm. It gives me solace we were able to spend time with her almost everyday since we got back to NY. Could you please let the SIT community know. Thanks,

Deepest condolences. I remember when I was doing my MA thesis at SIT, my advisor suggested I include Shakti in the process as a reader because I was doing my thesis on Cuisenaire rods as used in the Silent Way. Well, I was completely new to the Silent Way and so was not anxious to have this famous Silent Way teacher look over the nonsense I was scribbling, but I reluctantly agreed with my advisor and asked Shakti to read my thesis. Well, Shakti could not have been kinder and more supportive, and my thesis was better for her input. Thank you Shakti. Rest in peace.
