Of course, this should not happen. Could you pls send a problem report
-- you'll find a text file for it in the SILAS group in the START
menu. The file is called "Problem report, SILAS.txt". It describes how
to find out the version numbers of the operating system, version of
Word and version of SILAS. Then email the file to Kim and to me, using
the addresses inside the file. You have told us the version of Word,
but which service pack. For one version of Word you need to update to
the latest service pack of Word even to attach the template.
If there is any error message before Word crashes, then a screenshot
is particularly helpful.
Now to answer your question.
The best long-term solution is for you to download the latest service
pack for Word 2007 from Microsoft (or a local source) and apply it,
because SILAS can handle multiple books without any problem.

Until you can get the service pack, one of the workarounds you mention
should work. To import one file into another, go to the end of the
first file, then hold down the Alt key and type IL then specify the
second file. Repeat for each file.
You may find that when you try to format the four books as a booklet,
Word crashes. If so, format each booklet separately, and remove the
title page and copyright page from all but the first book, then import
the second and later books at the end of the first book. After that
you may not need to use any SILAS macros, so Word should not crash.
*Save often!*.
I have used SILAS to format a whole Bible in one document, so I don't
think your problem lies with SILAS.
In case there is something strange about the codes you are using,
could you pls do a backup of the four books from within Paratext, and
email me the resulting zip archive.
Hope you can get your book done,
Jim
