A user reported this problem:
> One issue - how do I get the footnotes to restart for each page? This is not
> something I can control from Paratext, nor as far as I can see, using SILAS.
> I've tried using the Word control (restart each page), under References

This happens with texts that have been exported from Paratext.

Paratext numbers the footnotes sequentially, and puts out to the RTF
file the explicit footnote reference letters. I have tried before to
make SILAS able to convert these to automatic numbers, but have not
succeeded yet. If I succeed, I'll let you know.

If any VBA programmers have any ideas how the macro
FootnotesNoSpacesBefore can achieve this, please let us know.

I've fixed it! The trick is to make the macro remake the footnotes
with no reference letter, and this makes Word display the next letter
in sequence. Then it obeys the instruction to restart the sequence at
"a" on each page.

This will be in SILAS when version 2.204 comes out.

In the mean time I can email you a patch that you can put into your
own version of SILAS if you would like to have it.

If you would NOT like that behaviour in the nexe version of SILAS,
please let me know, and I'll make it switchable.

Jim, thanks so much. Please send me the patch, and copy Sally Dechert at
translat...@sil.org .

While I'm here, when we use format as a booklet (A5), and we justify the
lines, the verse numbers quite often come at the end of a justified line,
without the corresponding text. We'd like to have the verse number accompany
its corresponding text. How to do this? Many thanks. John Macaulay

Congratulations, Jim! This is great!

I think it would be best to make it switchable if you can, with a radio button choice in the Set Up Project dialog box. Please, Silas users--your opinions would be good here.

Which do you use for your Scripture Project:
(a) Footnote letters starting from "a" on each page, or
(b) continuous "numbering" from a-z?
(c) Or neither... some use a fixed footnote caller,
(d) others use no caller, but each footnote begins with the reference C:V.

To clarify for newer users:
Silas can support all four of these options now. The two that are in question are (a) and (b). When you set up footnotes in Paratext you choose between (b), (c), (d), based on how you set up the footnote fields. Hopefully all your footnotes will be set up consistently-- newer Paratext users, now might be a good time to check this out if you have not yet thought it through. It's easier to format all your footnotes the same, even if you might change your mind down the road (you can change them all at once with regular expressions or CC). The document, "USFM Instructions," for which Silas adds a shortcut on your desktop and/or Quick Launch toolbar, will help you set up footnotes properly. [Jim, perhaps this shortcut should also be added to the Start Menu Silas folder, in case people have deleted it from QLaunch.]

Silas, thanks to Jim, has now added option (a), which will convert (b)-style Paratext footnotes, forcing the numbering to start over with "a" on each page of the Scripture printout.

Hi John and Sally,

I wonder if you may have unknowingly bypassed the macros that should automatically run when you attach Silas. Make sure you have done these steps, please:

1. Install Silas properly from the installation package (download it from          http://silas.googlecode.com/files/Silas-v2.103-1.02-Setup.exe
double-click on this file once you've downloaded it and followed the installation procedure). I think this must be done already or you would not be able to use the format as a booklet macro.

2. When you go to attach Silas template to a Scripture file exported from Paratext [or any other Scripture file], do it with one of these two items:
Click the menu entry under Word's Tools menu: "Attach Silas Formatting Template"
    OR click the button
labeled "SILAS" that shows in the toolbar or ribbon (Word 2007--you have to search a bit for it, I think).

If you instead attached the template using Word's standard "Templates & Addins"-->"Attach Template" dialog, some of the automatic macros Jim described will not run, which might cause the hanging verse numbers problem.

If this works, please let us know! Otherwise, send Jim the files he specified in his answer to you.

The problem with verse numbers coming at the end of lines has been solved, not quite sure how or why. We have been following the steps outlined below, Kim, so I don’t think it was that. It was only happening on a translator’s computer – and it may be that we should have installed SILAS, while logged on as an administrator. There is a partition on his computer for the translation data, I don’t know if that would affect it.
