Word 2007 endless loop fixing footnotes in Vwanji language

In response to the previous thread about formatting the Pastoral
Epistles in the Vwanji language, John sent me a backup of the books
from Paratext, and I was able to format them without any problem with
Word 2003. Word 2007, however goes into an endless loop, and I've
found that this happens whenever Word tries to change a footnote, such
as remaking the footnotes so they can have automatic numbers, or
changing "-" to no-break hyphens in crossreferences.

Word 2007 handles a file of all our Rossel Old Testament selections
without a problem, and that file is also Unicode, and also uses a
character that only came in recently, and the Rossel file is over 10
times the size of the Vwanji Pastoral Epistles.

I've been stepping the macro through, and Word 2007 can search and
find things in the footnotes, but as soon as it tries to change
something, the macro processor never comes back to the next line to
process. Ctrl-Break usually interrupts macros, but it has no effect
here.

I've changed the font from Charis SIL to Doulos SIL, and I've deleted
the Vwanji character that was added to Unicode recently, the upper
case U-bar, but the problem persists.

So all I can say at this stage is: Don't use Word 2007 to run macros
that try to change footnotes in the Vwanji language. Use Word 2003 for
Vwanji and all will work well.

John, it would be a help if you could try some other projects, and
document the ones where Word 2007 can do this SILAS processing and
where it can't, and let me know.

Any other members have ideas about this behaviour in Word 2007?

So you're saying it doesn't fail when the footnotes are, e.g., in
English?

On the assumption that it really is a bug in Office: If you don't
have
contacts at Microsoft, we do and could report this problem.

To do that you should produce a short demonstration document that
shows
this failure. Please take some time to trim both the data AND the
macro to
the minimum that demonstrates it. That allows the problem to be
easily
confirmed on some other machines and easier for Microsoft to believe
it is
their bug.

Thanks, Bob, I'll prepare the files and send them to you.
