Community Soccer Teams Shine  at the Annual Islamic Games

The annual Islamic Games (www.islamic-games.com) were re­cently held in Monmouth, New Jersey. Participants from our community comprised of our senior soccer team, Jaffery Sports Club, along with our youngsters on the Jaffery Juniors pro­gram: the under 8, under 12 and under 17 age categories. The teams competed against contingents from other Islamic institu­tions within the Tri-State area. With a record turnout of players and supporters, alongside our president Br Arif Jacksi, our com­munity's soccer contingents put up a remarkable showing. The senior team, Jaffery Sports Club, reached the semi-finals, only to bow out on penalty shootout after a 2 hour battle which ended in a 1-1 tie with last year's winners, Masjid Al Aman. The Jaffery Juniors under 8 contingent finished in second place, overcoming several teams along the way, and demonstrating huge improvements in their game from last year. The under 12 contingent displayed tremendous heart, playing against older kids and giving their all. They won a lot of respect from other teams. We are expecting big things from them in next year's tournament. A lot of credit goes out to Coach Munawar Kermalli who has instilled a good system and the under 12's have ele­vated their game to greater heights. The under 17 captured the imagination of many. Overcoming all odds, playing against more experienced teams, playing for each other, they became stronger as the tournament went on. Along the way, they over­came last year's champions in a tough semi-final game, and the main rival, Al-Ahad, our community's team from Allentown, in the final. They are this season's Islamic Games champions!! Kudos to the whole Jaffery Juniors program, the coaches, the ladies who run the program, and of course, the parents who support the program.
