Nominations for SIGTURK's officers elections for the year 2024

[SIGTURK Secretary]

Dear SIGTURK members,

We solicit nominations for SIGTURK elections for the next year's positions of a president, a secretary, and up to 5 other officers, constituting the Executive Committee. Members can nominate other members to eligible positions and/or can self-nominate by sending a message to our Google Group (https://groups.google.com/g/sigturk) or via sending an email to the secretary (sigturk....@gmail.com) until 31st of December 2023.

The President and the Secretary shall be members in good standing of the ACL (meaning that they should be ACL members). It is not mandatory to be an ACL members for other officers.

The duties of officers and the election rules can be found in our constitution: https://sigturk.github.io/constitution/

Thank you dear Secretary Sardana Ivanova and dear members of ACL SIGTURK,

I'm writing to emphasize the achievements and contributions our first set of officers made in the first two years we had founded SIGTURK. 

Some of these achievements are:

1. Organizing and building a cutting-edge infrastructure for transparent and accessible communication and decision making on GitHub: https://github.com/sigturk

2. Organizing an accessible and public research group which recently initiated its own project on foundation models with a compute grant by Microsoft

3. Proposing and getting accepted a workshop organization in the scope of ACL 2024

4. Growing its community to more than 100 members across the world

Thank you Sardana Ivanova, Mehmet Oguz Derin, Mammad Hajili, Aziza Mirzaidova, Jonne Saleva and Jamshidbek Mirzakhalov for putting hours of voluntary work to help build a community to allow its members conduct competitive research and collaborate with academics and global professionals.

 

With the extension of its scope and activities and in order to give our members the opportunity to have more chance to be involved and benefit from our group, such as initiating multiple research projects, leading the organization of our workshop and making successful impact on the progress of computational linguistics in Turkic languages, I call all interested members to express interest in contributing to our official duties by self nomination by the end of December 2023.

I'd be honored to continue to serve as the President and I am hopeful for the future contributions our next set of officers will bring to SIGTURK.

Dear SIGTURK community,

I think we've definitely had a great start in building SIGTURK into a
lively research community and the level of interest from the community
has been amazing to see. However, as our president, Duygu, mentioned, a
lot remains to be done especially as pertains to the ACL 2024 workshop
and the research projects powered by the Microsoft compute grant. I'm
very excited by both of these opportunities and would love to see us
make further progress on LLM-era NLP for Turkic languages. With that in
mind, I would also like to nominate myself to continue serving as an
Officer on the Executive Committee.

Dear SIGTURK community,

I would like to self-nominate myself for the open position on the executive committee to actively contribute in the planning of the ACL 2024 workshop and potential new projects within this community.

I am a last-year PhD student at LMU Munich and the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on synthetic data generation and robustness in NLP. I have been involved in previous and ongoing projects related to Turkish benchmarks, Turkish dependency parsing / sentiment analysis, and cross-lingual NLP tasks (including Turkish). I am particularly interested in expanding these efforts to include Turkic languages as well.

I am writing to express my interest in contributing to new projects within our community. I would like to play an active role in the planning of the ACL 2024 workshop and take a position in the available positions in the committee.

Currently, I am a postdoctoral fellow at CSIRO, Australia, with my primary focus on information extraction from scientific literature. Additionally, I have a keen interest in working with noisy datasets and exploring few-shot learning methodologies. My academic background includes in-depth studies on semantic representations and their applications in various NLP tasks specifically for the Turkish language.
