Background: I bought an iKommunicate Gateway from the initial Kickstarter release, but it's still in the box. I've purchased an R Pi 3. I have a solid wired and wifi network on the boat. I have a bunch of Arduinos and sensors for all kinds of things that I want to monitor, particularly in the engine room. I have a NMEA 2000 network for all of my Raymarine electronics, which includes a 0183-to-2000 converter for my old Raymarine wind gauge. My engine is a 2001 Isuzu that does NOT have any electronic output of engine data.

I see there's been a LOT of Signal K development since I last poked my nose into it, and I think it's probably to the point that I can finally start to do what I have always hoped to do: monitor all sorts of data about the boat on a tablet via wifi. I'm most interested, at least initially, in seeing the info that is not currently on my NMEA 2000 network, such as engine RPM, a bunch of temperature readings around the engine room, and water levels in both bilges - all of which I can sense with an Arduino.

If you were in my position (described above), how would you start?

Thanks so much!

I would start by getting the node server installed on the Rpi. You have a bunch of options for getting data from the Arduino, I do not use them, so probably not the best person to make recommendations on the that. You can write a node server plugin or provider or possibly make the Arduino output Signal K.

Another option is to use the new node-red plugin. Some info on that here: https://nodered.org/docs/hardware/arduino and https://github.com/SignalK/node-red-embedded/blob/master/README.md

Lastly, I would join us on Slack (Join the developers on Slack), You can probably get some great feedback there on the #hardware channel and go to #support if you need help with setup/configuration.

+1 on joining Slack, a lot easier to cover questions like what sensors and code you may already have and how to best integrate everything.

Some links that might come in useful:
