City of Manassas Goes for World Record

City of Manassas, VA . . . On Saturday, May 4, 2013 the City of Manassas is embarking on the Big Day of Serving in the Weems community. As part of the day's events, and to encourage community spirit, the City is going to attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the largest game of red light/green light. The City of Manassas is an advocate of healthy living and encourages healthy outdoor activity and red light/green light is a simple, healthy outdoor activity that is fun for the whole family.

The current world record for red light/green light is held by Ford Motor Company with 451 participants playing at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, on Sept. 18, 2012. The City would like to go way over this number of participants and needs the public's help.

All ages and abilities are welcome to participate and can sign up at www.manassascity.org/worldrecord. The event, sponsored by First Virginia Community Bank, will take place at Weems Elementary School at 8750 Weems Rd, Manassas, VA, 20110. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the record attempt at 9 a.m.

The Big Day of Serving is an event that rallies youth and adult volunteers from around the area to transform the Weems Community through environmental, recreational, and educational projects. It is one day in one community and will make an impact that will last for years to come.

Project sites include Weems Elementary, Byrd Park, and Stonewall Park. Projects include mulching, landscaping, picking up litter, cleaning creeks and ponds, removing graffiti, painting basketball courts, installingplayground equipment, laying mosaic tile, and repairing two baseball fields. A free lunch will be delivered to volunteers at their project sites. To round out the day, Neighborhood Services will celebrate the community's effort with a Block Party, complete with food and live entertainment. To take part in this extraordinary experience, visit www.manassascity.org/givingback.
