The idea of running high-def games over the internet (in the cloud) is
gaining traction within the gaming industry. AMDTM is building a
petaflop scale machine - AMD Fusion Render CloudTM - to deliver
graphic intensive applications, e.g. games, through the internet to
devices running a web browser. Companies like OnLiveTM are offering
games on demand, anywhere, anytime over the internet.
Demonstrations show 720p images being sent in real time to almost any
device, including handheld devices. A 720p stream requires a 4 Mbps
(approx) connection and even a standard definition image stream
requires 1.5 Mbps.
Do these data and bandwidth requirements make cloud gaming in
Australia a pipe dream?
Is this the next big thing? Does it make sense in Western Australia?
There will be an informal presentation and discussion about the
benefits and issues surrounding gaming in the cloud.
