Oregon has experienced a recent cycle of emergencies and disasters, including floods, drought, wildfires, ice storms, excessive heat and a pandemic. These disasters illustrate why being prepared can make a big difference.

A large part of OEM's mission is to empower people to be as prepared as possible in an emergency because once a disaster strikes, the time to prepare has passed. The Be 2 Weeks Ready program recommends people have an emergency plan and enough food, water and supplies to survive on their own for at least two weeks following any large-scale disaster.

Disasters can happen anywhere, at any time, and once they occur, it may take days or even weeks for responders to reach everyone who needs help. This will especially be true in the event of a Cascadia earthquake and tsunami.

The Be 2 Weeks Ready Program has been revamped and will be released publicly in June 2024. All updated materials will be available for download on this webpage and offered in six languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese and ASL.

The revamped program will cover the following units on preparedness: Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Plan, Food Plan, Water Plan, Waste and Hygiene Plan, Shelter, First Aid and emergency management. The units are followed by a series of activities for people to practice what they learn.

Emergency managers, community-based organizations, community emergency response teams (CERT) and faith-based leaders will be trained over the next few months to facilitate the Be 2 Weeks Ready program within their circles. This program can be done individually or with a trained facilitator in the community.

  • Include the time your application is at one of our passport agencies or centers.
  • You may get your passport on a different date than your family member or friend.
  • Mailing times are not included in processing times. Consider the total time it will take to receive your passport when you are booking travel.
  • It may take two weeks for your application to get to us, and two weeks for you to get your passport after we mail it.

You may receive your passport and the supporting documents in separate mailings. If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services if you only applied for a passport card.

We change our processing times as demand for passports changes during the year. From late winter into summer, demand for passports is generally higher than other periods of the year. Plan ahead and apply during our slower season from October through December.

If you receive a letter or email requesting more information to complete your application, respond as soon as possible. If you receive this letter or email, it may take longer to get your passport. Follow the instructions in the letter or email, and go to our Respond to a Letter or Email page for more information.

Note: You must serve a one-week unpaid waiting period on your claim before you are paid UI benefits. The waiting period can only be served if you certify for benefits and meet all eligibility requirements for that week. Your first certification will usually include the one-week unpaid waiting period and one week of payment if you meet eligibility requirements for both weeks. The waiting period has no effect on the maximum benefit amount on a claim. Certify for benefits every two weeks to continue receiving benefit payments.

If you have a Pending status for any weeks on your UI Online Claim History, we may need to confirm your identity or eligibility before we can process payment. Monitor your UI Online homepage for notifications and review the UI Online Claim Status Tracker for updates and possible next steps.

When your first benefit payment is available, you will receive a debit card in the mail. Once you activate the card you can track, use, and transfer your benefit payments. Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs, so you should keep it until it expires.

If you move out of California, you must actively look for work and register for job search assistance with the local employment office in your new state within 21 days of submitting your California unemployment application or you could be denied benefits.

For example, you can qualify because of a major surgery, during pregnancy, to receive treatment for a chronic health condition and to receive inpatient treatment for substance abuse or mental health. The amount of paid leave you can take is determined by your medical provider (up to 12 weeks a year).

Up to 12 weeks of medical leave or family leave. Medical leave is for recovering from or getting treatment for a serious health condition. Family leave is for taking care of a qualifying family member who has a serious health condition, for bonding with a new child or for certain military events.

Up to 16 weeks of combined medical and family leave if you have more than one qualifying event in the same claim year. This could include medical leave for pregnancy or to recover from giving birth, then family leave to bond with your baby. Or you could qualify for family leave to care for a family member, then medical leave for yourself within the same year.

Up to 18 weeks of combined medical and family leave if you experience a condition in pregnancy that results in incapacity, like being put on bed rest or having a C-section. There is a checkbox on the certification form where your healthcare provider should certify that your serious health condition is related to pregnancy.

A week is a unit of time equal to seven days. It is the standard time period used for short cycles of days in most parts of the world. The days are often used to indicate common work days and rest days, as well as days of worship. Weeks are often mapped against yearly calendars, but are typically not the basis for them, as weeks are not based on astronomy.

Ancient cultures had different "week" lengths, including ten in Egypt and an eight-day week for Etruscans. The Etruscan week was adopted by the ancient Romans, but they later moved to a seven-day week, which had spread across Western Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean due to the influence of the Christian seven-day week, which is rooted in the Jewish seven-day week. In 321 CE, Emperor Constantine the Great officially decreed a seven-day week in the Roman Empire, including making Sunday a public holiday.[1][2] This later spread across Europe, then the rest of the world.

In English, the names of the days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sunday, Monday and Saturday are named after celestial bodies in our solar system. The other four days are named after Norse gods. In many languages, the days of the week are named after gods or classical planets. Such a week may be called a planetary week (i.e., a classical planetary week). [4] Certain weeks within a year may be designated for a particular purpose, such as Golden Week in China and Japan, and National Family Week in Canada. More informally, certain groups may advocate awareness weeks, which are designed to draw attention to a certain subject or cause. The term "week" may also be used to refer to a sub-section of the week, such as the workweek and weekend.

Cultures vary in which days of the week are designated the first and the last, though virtually all have Saturday, Sunday or Monday as the first day. The Geneva-based ISO standards organization uses Monday as the first day of the week in its ISO week date system through the international ISO 8601 standard.[a] Most of Europe and China consider Monday the first day of the (work) week, while North America, Israel, South Asia, and many Catholic and Protestant countries, consider Sunday the first day of the week, while Saturday is judged as the first day of the week in much of the Middle East (Israel excepted) and North Africa due to the Islamic influence. Other regions are mixed, but typically observe either Sunday or Monday as the first day.[5]

The three Abrahamic religions observe different days of the week as their holy day. Jews observe their Sabbath (Shabbat) on Saturday, the seventh day, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, in honor of God's creation of the world in six days and then resting on the seventh. Most Christians observe Sunday (the Lord's Day), the first day of the week in traditional Christian calendars, in honor of the resurrection of Jesus. Muslims observe their "day of congregation", known as yaum al-jum`ah, on Friday because it was described as a sacred day of congregational worship in the Quran.[6]

Historically, the system of dominical letters (letters A to G identifying the weekday of the first day of a given year) has been used to facilitate calculation of the day of week. The day of the week can be easily calculated given a date's Julian day number (JD, i.e. the integer value at noon UT):Adding one to the remainder after dividing the Julian day number by seven (JD modulo 7 + 1) yields that date's ISO 8601 day of the week. For example, the Julian day number of 15 May 2024 is 2460446. Calculating 2460446 mod 7 + 1 yields 3, corresponding to Wednesday.[8] In 1973, John Conway devised the Doomsday rule for mental calculation of the weekday of any date in any year.
