Subject: I AM NOTHING
LIKE MY MOTHER (A One Filipino-American Woman
Show)
Hello my fellow Filipinos!
My name is Christine Corpuz and I'm a recent
graduate of NYU's Graduate Acting Program last May. A one-woman show I wrote and
acted in last Spring as a final "Freeplay" project at NYU, entitled I AM NOTHING
LIKE MY MOTHER, just got picked up for a professional 4 week run and is
being produced by The Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York. It's a ground-breaking event, as The Nuyorican has never
produced, invested in, nor promoted a Filipino-American artist ever
before. The show opens on December 21, 2007 thru Jan. 13th,
2008.
Being the only Filipino-American actress at NYU's Tisch
Graduate Acting program during the three years I attended, I found it very
important to place myself in a starring role when we were given an opportunity
to create whatever work we wanted during the "Freeplay" festival last Spring.
Though I was blessed with great "character-driven" roles, I was never seen as a
lead actress during those years, thus I decided to create my own show. Auditions
got slow for me about 2 months ago. Instead of getting frustrated and angry with
not being seen as a "mainstream" actress, I decided to remount my show and
create my own work instead of waiting for a role to be written for me. I pitched
my show to several theater companies here in New York, and
was finally picked up for a full produced run by The Nuyorican Poets
Cafe. I saw that it was a contradiction in itself, being an
Asian-American as well as an actress, and so I created my show around that
concept on a more universal level. This show being produced is not only proof
that a Filipino-American can be seen in a starring-role, but it's also the
result of a passionate drive in a new Asian-American artist here in the city.
So, with that being said, I humbly ask for your support in not only
publicizing and seeing the show, but in also aiding in bringing
Filipino-American artists into the mainstream light. Thanks for your time
and hope to see you soon! Maraming salamat po!!!
Sincerely,
Christine Corpuz
