to SIGARAB: Special Interest Group on Arabic Natural Language Processing
We're extending a pragmatic annotation project beyond Egyptian Arabic, and I'm looking for 2 annotators per dialect.
Dialects needed:
🔹 Levantine (Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Jordanian)
🔹 Gulf (Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, Qatari, Bahraini, Omani)
🔹 Maghrebi (Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Libyan)
🔹 Iraqi
🔹 Sudanese
What we're looking for:
Native speaker of the dialect you'd annotate, not just fluent in it. Regional intuitions are the whole point.
Academic background in Linguistics. Sociopragmatics depth is a major plus.
Keen attention to nuance and context.
What the work involves:
Annotating social media comments for pragmatic intent. Full guidelines and training provided, no prior annotation experience needed.
Starting point: a short pilot of 40 comments in your own dialect. That tells us both whether the work suits you before anyone commits to more.
Why join:
Hands-on experience in pragmatic annotation for NLP and Computational Linguistics.
A formal certificate of contribution and a named acknowledgement in the dataset and any resulting publication.
Your dialect represented in a resource where it currently isn't. Most Arabic pragmatic work stops at MSA or Egyptian.
