Dear colleagues,
I’m happy to share a new chapter (with Jiaxuan Zong) published in The Routledge Handbook of Language Teacher Identity: “Language Teacher Identity and Translanguaging” (attached).
This chapter takes a critical examination of the growing scholarly literature on translanguaging in language teacher education, with a particular focus on language teacher identity development. It unpacks the complex processes through which language teacher identities are instantiated, constructed, and contested as educators engage with translanguaging across coursework, field experiences, workshops, and other contexts. The chapter concludes with implications for supporting positive language teacher identity development in translanguaging-infused teacher education, as well as directions for future research.
The chapter is part of The Routledge Handbook of Language Teacher Identity (Tavares & Melo-Pfeifer, 2026), a comprehensive and timely volume on language teacher identity across global contexts.
I hope this work is useful for your teaching, research, and ongoing conversations around multilingualism and teacher education.
Warm regards,
Zhongfeng Tian
