Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to share our recent Forum article published in Applied Linguistics:

Rafi, A. S. M., & Tian, Z. (2026). Ten years of translanguaging: Reflections and future directions in dialogue with Ofelia García and Li Wei. Applied Linguistics. https://doi.org/10.1093/applin/amag036

The year 2024 marked ten years since the publication of Translanguaging: Language, Bilingualism, and Education. To reflect on this milestone, the Forum builds on a public dialogue with Ofelia García and Li Wei held at the International Conference on the Trans-Phenomenon in Language, Literature, and Culture, organized by the Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.

The Forum explores several thematic questions that have emerged over the past decade, including:

  • the conceptual evolution of translanguaging;
  • its relationship to code-switching and related constructs;
  • its uneven institutional uptake across geopolitical contexts;
  • its relationship to decolonial and Indigenous epistemologies; and
  • its entanglement with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

We hope this Forum contributes to ongoing conversations about the future directions of translanguaging research, pedagogy, and language policy.

We hope you find it useful, and we welcome your thoughts and feedback.

Best,

Rafi & Zhongfeng
