When learning a second language, while we’re often told to stick to the target language, embracing our home language can be a superpower! 💪
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting @prof.kevinwhtai Professor Kevin Tai from The University of Hong Kong for an enlightening discussion on translanguaging.
So, what exactly is translanguaging? It’s a pedagogical approach where students are encouraged to think and communicate in multiple languages, using their home language as a bridge to mastering another.
📍With translanguaging, learners can switch between languages, empowering them to choose the most effective mode of expression in any given moment.
If you are raising or teaching multilingual children and hope to create your own translanguaging space, here are some expert tips from Professor Tai:
📚 Tap into multilingual resources;
🎨 Get creative with multimodal materials (think posters, drawings, and videos);
👩‍👧‍👦 Foster a co-learning environment for you and your kids.
