Dear Colleagues,

I’m delighted to share our new open-access article published in The Modern Language Journal: “Conceptualizing the Transformativeness of Translanguaging: A Spectrum Perspective.”

This piece synthesizes over a decade of PK–12 translanguaging research in the U.S. and proposes a new framework for understanding translanguaging’s transformative potential. We suggest that transformativeness operates along a spectrum—from recognition and inclusion (e.g., affirming students’ bi/multilingualism), to deconstruction and innovation (e.g., validating linguistic “mixing” as legitimate bi/multilingual practice), and finally to social critique and action (e.g., engaging in explicit justice-oriented critique and efforts to challenge inequitable conditions).

Please feel free to circulate this with colleagues, students, research groups, or teacher networks interested in bilingual education, applied linguistics, and social justice–oriented pedagogy.

Thank you for helping spread the word!

Warmly,
Zhongfeng
