Position: District Technician
Location: South-East Sierra Leone (Kono, Kenema, Kailahun, Bo-Pujehun-Bonthe, Moyamba)
PowerGen Renewable Energy is a micro-grid developer, implementer, and operator in West Africa, reshaping the prevailing rural electrification model in the region. PowerGen is creating an African energy system that utilizes clean, renewable energy and smarter grids to deliver power to all. We work with the latest decentralized technologies to monitor and control our systems remotely, providing power to 40 sites and 12,500 customers across Southern and Eastern Sierra Leone from our office in Freetown.
PowerGen Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team strives to optimally serve customers through ensuring that assets achieve optimal performance levels. The key to a successful operations and Maintenance process is working to prevent issues before they occur, but when problems do occur, having established processes and resources for diagnosing and resolving those problems quickly and safely, with limited electricity interruption for customers. In order to continuously improve customer experience, the PowerGen Operation and MaintenanceTeam determines what activities must be done to ensure that all physical assets continue to operate optimally while maximizing technical uptime, optimizing customer satisfaction, and minimizing cost.
As the District Technician you will oversee cluster sites in the district where we operate. You’ll be focused on supporting on-site Technicians who manage our customers that use electricity from our mini-grids each day. You will report to the O&M cluster assistant(s), and will also
work with the Customer service team in Freetown.
What You’ll Make Happen:
A more complete – but by no means exhaustive – list of responsibilities is provided below:
● You’ll troubleshoot, perform checks and maintenance on minigrids (solar PV systems and distribution network) which will include working on PV arrays, inverters, electrical components, cabling,; LV/MV distribution lines with smart meters.
● Proactively responding to on-site technical issues which are beyond the capability of the on-site Technician and reporting unresolved issues which affect generation and distribution assets immediately to Cluster assistant
● Carry out periodic and routine tasks and functions, and providing detail reports to the cluster assistant
● Monitoring on-site technicians to ensure that daily, weekly and Monthly activities are carried out in an effective, safe and time efficient manner
● When dealing with unexpected issues, you should establish a comprehensive understanding of the issues through detailed fact-finding and implement an established
procedure for correcting issues in a timely fashion. All unplanned maintenance activities should always be based on thorough root cause analysis to ensure that the failure does not re-occur.
● Manage spare stock level in cluster and provide reports to Cluster assistant
● Provide periodic reports on generator status’, guarantee fuel security and ensuring that routine service is done appropriately and timely
● Ensure compliance with relevant HSE policies, procedures, objectives and regulations and the commitment to achieving Zero Harm through safe behaviours on site

You Already Have:
● An Ability to manage a team of at least 5 people
● Understanding and 1+ years’ experience in operation and Maintenance of above-ground distribution network distribution, PV solar installations and/or generators.
● An understanding of Krio and English; local district language a plus
● Sierra Leonean citizenship and must have had experience in working in Sierra Leone
● Valid MotorCycle riders’ License.
● Good written and oral communication skills.
● Enthusiasm in working for the field of renewable energy!
● A minimum WASSCE (WAEC) Certificate. Technical certificate or Diploma in
Electrical/Mechanical Engineering from a recognised technical institution a plus .
