A project funded by BMZ and co-managed by Caritas and GLRA

Job Location: Makeni

Job Type: One year (Renewable)

Reports To: The Project Officer

Caritas Makeni is the Diocesan development and Relief agency of the Catholic Diocese of Makeni in Northern Sierra Leone established in 1979 by Bishop Azzolini. JOB SUMMARY

 

You will measure, make and correct orthopedic brace fittings and perform routine dressing changes. They assess patient comfort in relation to plaster casts and splints. You will also be responsible for inventory maintenance and customer feedback. You should report weekly to the project officer. You also keep time records for the assistant technicians.

 

 

You will help with the production of the orthopedic equipment. You will also make minor adjustments and repairs to the aids. You will be responsible to the senior technicians.

 

Additionally, orthopedic technicians teach patients to use walking aids, such as canes and crutches, and fit and adjust equipment as necessary. Under the guidance of trained technicians fabricate splints and manage other simple medical technology, including braces and prosthetic limbs.

 

 

Roles and Key Responsibilities

This position requires a fundamental knowledge of technical work with orthopedic bracing and casting related activities. Positions allocated to this level are responsible for production, application, modification, repair and fitting of a wide variety of casts, splints and braces. Casting activities include application of upper and lower extremity casts from simple to complex using a variety of materials; arrange, assemble and adjust traction equipment; apply and adjust braces and splints; and remove sutures and staples. The Casting Technician will also assist in stocking and ordering of supplies.

·        Production of prosthetic materials

·        Shape cast to ensure maximum comfort and minimum unnecessary pressures

·        Performs appropriate documentation and client/patient education related to cast or splinting

·        Mold, fit and trim synthetic or plastic splints to fit patient/clients

·        Customize splints and braces as necessary for patient use. 

 

Basic Qualifications (BQs)

 

Education:

·        High school diploma/degree or equivalent.

·        Completion of a Certified Orthopedic Technology training program preferred.

·        Completion of an Allied Health program in a related field with Surgical Assist program preferred.

·        Completion of an accredited medical assistant program Certification/Licensure: CPR certification for Health Care Providers.

 

Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a clinic and/or orthopedic workshop setting.

 

 

Skills:

·        Ability to take vital signs.

·        Ability to maintain quality control standards.

·        Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively and take direction of multiple sources.

·        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, clients, colleagues and the public.

·        Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with difficult people.

 

 

 Other Requirements:

·        Thorough knowledge of orthopedic nomenclature, anatomy and disease process.

·        Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.

·        Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.

·        Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.

·        Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing.

·        Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance and punctuality
