Building on the work from our first call, our second call looked more closely at how you build power in your local community. You can view the video of the event here.
We started to go through the Pennsylvania Action on Climate (PAC) Worksheets for Power/Influence Mapping. You can find blank copies of this worksheet here.
One thing that we think is very important when you are organizing in your own community is to connect to the larger movement. You are not in this fight alone. We’d like to connect you to others who are in the same place that you are – or maybe a few steps ahead of you. That connection can be invaluable.
On the call, Tom Bailey shared information about Loudoun Climate Project's work on data centers. You can find a link to that here.
I also said that I'd share the information from Ginny's presentation last month.
I will also forward you another model ordinance when it is forwarded to me.
The first connection is a statewide data centers call that happens every week on Wednesdays at 6. You can get on that list – which will get you an invite - by reaching out to Lauren Posey lau...@protectpt.org
Way back in 1967, Dr. King talked about the interlocking evils of poverty, racism, and militarism. There are also groups that are focused on other issues but they have also focused on data centers because they recognize that the data center issue is connected to other issues.
The Pennsylvania Poor People’s Campaign has recently adopted data centers as an issue of concern. The member organizations of the PA PPC are engaged in other fights but they recognize that this is one of those issues that is interconnected with all of the other issues. You can reach out to the PA PPC at tammyro...@gmail.com
Put People First PA’s primary focus is healthcare, but they recognize that data centers are intimately connected. You can reach out to PPF – PA at nij...@gmail.com
March on Harrisburg’s primary focus in getting money out of politics and people in, but they, too, have their eyes on data centers. You can reach MOH at and...@mohpa.org
Obviously, PAC is also interested in this issue and you can reach us at mba...@gmail.com.
If you have questions about the worksheet, want connections to others, or want to share stuff about the session you can reach out to me at mba...@gmail.com (or give me a call at 724-4318560) or you can reach Penn at penng...@gmail.com
We'll have our next meeting on Wednesday, February 11, at 7 PM. You can RSVP here.
Finally, I wanted to make one other plea. There was recently an article in the Washington Post about data centers. The gist was that opposition to data centers crosses the political divide. In these times, we need to reach out to others who have different outlooks than we do. We will never get the movement we need if we only speak to the people we agree with.
In solidarity
Michael
