a friend of mine recently gave me a Dell Inspiron 2320 which he has not used for a very long time. He had, what he called a "password problem" that he could not resolve. He put the Dell away and bought a new computer. He knows that I am fairly good at fixing computers and having two sons he gave it to me.
What I found out was that his password problem was not a Windows log in or admin problem as I suspected but rather a bios password at startup. He does not know how the password got set and does not even recall ever seeing that screen until after having houseguests. Regardless of why the computer is asking for a bios password, it is and no one knows what it is. I have tried all the common ones and none of them work.
I read Shawn B's post on Help Owl dot com on how to reset the password using the jumpers. It hasn't worked. I have also removed the cmos battery and left it out for nearly an hour -- that didn't work either.
When I first turn it on, just for a moment I get the Dell splash screen that shows F2 for Setup and F12 for Boot Options, however pressing neither of those (either quickly, slowly, repeatedly and/or in conjunction with either ctrl or alt) will take me to Set up or Boot Options. I have a Windows 7 recovery disc which I put into the drive thinking that, if nothing else I could restart the computer and it would read the disc. That did not happen either.
What can I do with this?? If I give it back he is going to throw it out. He only gave it to me because I have had success in the past fixing computers. Having bought a new one he isn't going to pay to have it fixed and I cannot afford to take it to be fixed either ....that is why I do my best to fix them on my own :) My kids would love it if I could get it working.
Remove every power source of the PC, then move the jumper from Pins 2 & 3 to pins 1 & 2, dont put the covers yet, place the back leg (plastic clear) to allow stand up the PC and then put the power cable, once the F2/F12 screen select F2, with this the password request disappears, navihate and set a new administration password, then F10 to save, the exit. Once the PC tries to power on, just push the power button to turn it off, unplunge the power cable and then put the password jumper back to pins 3 & 4. Power on the PC again and hit F2 again to go to Bios Setup, then, you can type any password you want. It worked in my Inspiron One 2320
Step 4. Go to the BIOS setup program section and click on Clearing Forgotten Passwords. Then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Dell BIOS password resetting.
Step 5. Go back to the Dell Setup Unlock screen, type the password you just got from the bios pw org website, and press Ctrl + Enter to clear the admin password. If luckily, you can get the Dell BIOS password bypassed and make changes to BIOS settings.
As you might know, BIOS passwords cannot be restored. So, we recommend you contact Dell Technical Support to get a password release code. It is based on the unique password prompt that is generated by your Dell computer.
I need assistance with my HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 server. We do not know what the bios password was set to, so we need to reset it. I have already tried to reset it by removing the CMOS and by booting with position 6 of the maintenance switch set to 'on'. All other documentation I have found online about this issue is in regards to other gens / models. Is the process any different for this specific model? Nothing I have tried has worked thus far.
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately clearing the NVRAM did not resolve the issue. I followed the instructions exactly, got the confirmation screen that the system was being default configured, powered off the machine when prompted, flipped switch 6 back to off, and powered the machine back on. I have tried this multiple times, but the bios password has not been removed. Any additional assistance would be greatly appreciated
Your notebook uses the HP Sparekey method of password recovery. You were supposed to answer 3 questions so that you could remember your password in the event you forgot it. Also, you could have enrolled your password with HP and if you lost it you could get it from HP customer support if you provided proof of ownership.
If you just set a password and did not enroll in HP Sparekey or answer the 3 security questions you will not be able to enter the BIOS. If that was a power on password, your notebook is only good for parts (except the motherboard).
1. The best and easiest method: Close OS and shut down the electricity power of computer. Open your computer box, take out the cmos battery from the mainboard. Then the bios password will be reset to blank. Put it back after a few minutes.
i have over 260+ of these HP elitebook 8530p notebooks all with Bios Administrator Passwords.... they came to us from a office company that closed down and we have no way of getting the password for the bios to get them back up and running to resale.... we have read up alot about these and we know that there is not a way to clear the password with the cmos batter pulled or batter pulled or cold booting the system.... we would like to get professinal help from HP maybe a way to reset them without haveing to take them all the way apart... i have seen some deals online about how you can remove a certian chip on the motherboard and replace it but we have tried with one unit and still have a bios administrator password pop up on the screen when going to bois...
HP please help us on finding a way to reset the password for the bois so we can resale and put these nice notebooks back into the market... we have already invested alot into them and cant affored to loose anymore money and we can not afford to trash these units... parting them down will not even come close to half the price of the units... we need a fast response and a quick fix over 260+ of these units are on pallets and every day that goes by is money lost in value of these units....
to re-gain access to the system. If the BIOS user forgets their password ... go to F10 to remove and add the BIOS user again, Login using user... as Guest User and then reset Security to defaults. Save and Exit."
so your saying i have over 260+ notebooks that are useless... i dont see how hp would let that kind of product go to the trash.... and also that will hurt our company to the point that we might have to claim bankrupt

O.K. I had this problem and am a freelance technician. Many opions surround this notebook because it is a quality Buisness machine with advanced security built in. To resolve the administrator password reset on a machine the user must first reset the RTC by removing the AC power supply, then the laptop battery, finally remove the hard-drive and the watch type battery under the hard-drive. Second: wait for about 6 minutes. Next install the watch type battery and the hard-drive(screw the cover for the hard-drive back in place afterwards). Next do not put the laptop battery on, just plug in the AC adapter and power the machine on for a minute or so. You should see an error message advising the bios has recovered. Now you can put the battery back on.
Next power the machine to boot into windows. If your drivers are in for the wireless or Lan card open internet explorer and navigate to HP.com and select suppport, select downloads and enter 6530b. it will take to to page to select the Operating system your using. Select your Operating system and on the driver page you need download the fingerprint reader driver, HP ProtectTools Security Manager 4.10 and HP ProtectTools BIOS Configuration. Install the fingerprint driver (if needed) HP Protect Tools software and HP ProtectTools BIOS Configuration . After reboot run HP ProtectTools Security Manager For Administrators and choose Bios configuration. You will see at the top a place for you to enter a password for the BIOS however BIOS will not give you this option alone so set your new BIOS Password and when you restart the machine press F10 to get bios setup, enter your password and choose "User Management" delete the user under Protect tools User. select reset fingerprint reader and under TPM select "reset to factory defaults".
