The Fractal Design Define R4 is the latest in the Define Series of computer cases offering minimalistic and stunning Scandinavian design fused with maximum sound reduction, configurability and functionality.

The Define R4 side and front door panels are fitted with dense, sound-absorbing material making it a benchmark for noise reduction. It also accommodates up to 8 HDDs, all modern graphics card sizes, and multiple ventilation options - including two standard Silent Series R2 hydraulic bearing fans - to keep internal components at optimal temperatures.

The two supplied fans (fitted front and rear) are now both large 140mm fans so there is more airflow at slower, quieter speeds. The case itself is 25mm wider than the older Define R3 so that you can now fit CPU coolers up to 170 mm tall (when no fan is installed in the side panel). A wider case body also allows for improved cable routing behind the motherboard which is now 26mm wide.

Behind the acoustically lined door, the case sports a new integrated three speed fan controller and a pull down front cover revealing a dual fan bay with an easily removable dust filter and tool-free access to the front fan.

Their products are designed and engineered in the company's headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden,[3] and manufactured in China. As Fractal Design is operating internationally, the company also has offices in Europe, North America and Asia.

Fractal Design was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2007. In 2009, international recognition for the company grew after the first computer case within the Define series was introduced. In the same year, the company opened a North American office in Dallas, Texas.[4] A few months later, an Asia office was established to handle increased Product Development and Sales.

By the end of 2016, the company continued to develop the concepts of Scandinavian design, silent computing and support of powerful computer configurations by launching new computer cases under the Define series.[5] As of 2020, Fractal products are available in more than 50 countries.

One of my personal favorite cases from Fractal Design is the Torrent High Airflow Case. This computer chassis is massive and designed to address the community concerns that modern PC cases had become literal ovens. This would cause plastic motherboard components to melt, video cards to spontaneously combust and storage drives to fail. These concerns were widely published on various YouTube channels which perpetuated the rumor that DIY computing was nothing more than a failed experiment.

Of course, the truth is, none of that ever happened and short of a house fire I'm sure nothing in side your PC case is in danger of melting. As you can imagine reports of inefficient chassis cooling had been widely exaggerated for the sake of clickbait and making a name for themselves.

In this review we will be looking at the North XL from Fractal Design. As with many Fractal products they are released in stages A little over a year ago the Fractal Design North was released and encompassed a decently sized Mid Tower chassis supporting standard sized ATX, and smaller, motherboards. I suspect this is to sample the community and determine if smaller or larger versions need to be released, either way I like the approach.

Much like the original North chassis there are two basic versions across two color schemes. The version featured in this review is the Tempered Glass in Black. Other configurations include Black with a Mesh side panel and two white editions with Tempered Glass or Mesh.

Some of the accent colors change between the color schemes including the choice of wood slats used on the front bezel. The black edition will feature a darker Walnut while the white edition has the much lighter Oak. I would have suggested a Maple for the white edition however, I do find the color contrast to be one of the defining features of the North chassis series.

Fractal dimensions (FDs) are frequently used for summarizing the complexity of retinal vascular. However, previous techniques on this topic were not zone specific. A new methodology to measure FD of a specific zone in retinal images has been developed and tested as a marker for stroke prediction. Higuchi's fractal dimension was measured in circumferential direction (FDC) with respect to optic disk (OD), in three concentric regions between OD boundary and 1.5 OD diameter from its margin. The significance of its association with future episode of stroke event was tested using the Blue Mountain Eye Study (BMES) database and compared against spectrum fractal dimension (SFD) and box-counting (BC) dimension. Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed FDC as a better predictor of stroke (H = 5.80, P = 0.016, α = 0.05) compared with SFD (H = 0.51, P = 0.475, α = 0.05) and BC (H = 0.41, P = 0.520, α = 0.05) with overall lower median value for the cases compared to the control group. This work has shown that there is a significant association between zone specific FDC of eye fundus images with future episode of stroke while this difference is not significant when other FD methods are employed.
