Dear Democratic Organization of Richmond County (DORC) Members:
I’m writing to you at a perilous time for our City, State & Nation. We are facing a dual crisis of affordability and attacks from Donald Trump, and New Yorkers simply don’t have the confidence that government is on their side., Hard working New Yorkers are asking if the government will start to deliver for their families and loved ones.
I’m running for Comptroller because we need leaders with proven track record of taking on hard issues and ensuring we fight for our communities. I believe my experience and vision uniquely position me to help tackle the challenges we face.
I’m a former bi-linugal math and science teacher in the South Bronx. I went on to found the Community First federal credit union, an FDIC institution that has now made over $100 million in small loans to community members – allowing families to buy their first home, start a small business, and more. I saw first-hand how important and effective smart, targeted investments are in our communities.
I’m a former NYC Council Member, where I served first as the Park Committee Chair, and then Chair of the Health Committee during the Covid pandemic, where I brought a science-based, fact based approach to ensuring that New Yorkers had the information they needed to support their families. As Manhattan Borough President, I’ve made tackling our affordability crisis my top priority, and put forth policy proposals to improve our broken mental health system, improve quality of life, and more.
As Comptroller, I will focus on addressing the affordability crisis that is driving too many New Yorkers out of the city we love. I am committed to using the Comptroller’s office to make life more manageable for families and individuals on Staten Island. In addition, I will hold City Hall accountable to ensure the Mayor delivers the services New Yorkers need and deserve. The Comptroller’s oversight powers are a powerful tool to drive efficiency, transparency, and real results. We must demand excellence from our government, particularly because local government will play a more important role than ever as we work to stop Donald Trump from attacking our neighbors and cutting funding from programs we rely upon – from medicaid to Head Start.
I will safeguard and grow our city’s pension funds through wise and responsible investments. Our retirees worked hard to earn their benefits, and I will ensure the system remains strong and sustainable for generations to come.
Now, as I seek the Democratic nomination for New York City Comptroller, I would be honored to have the support of the members of this incredible, grassroots organization.
I’ll be a Comptroller that will make Staten Island proud.
Thank you for considering joining me on this journey.
Sincerely,
Mark Levine
Manhattan Borough President
