'Am I an Antisemite?' • Ex-model Removed From White House Religion Panel After 'Hijacking' Meeting to Denounce Israel and Zionism

WASHINGTON — Carrie Prejean Boller, a commissioner on the White House's Religious Liberty Commission, has been ousted from her role after causing uproar this week when she condemned Israel and Zionism during a meeting on antisemitism, echoing talking points from leading right-wing commentators who have been frequently accused of anti-Jewish sentiment.
"No member of the commission has the right to hijack a hearing for their own personal and political agenda on any issue. This is clearly, without question, what happened Monday in our hearing on antisemitism," Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the commission's chair, said on Wednesday as he announced the decision.
Boller, who originally rose to prominence through the beauty pageant circuit, eventually gained further recognition while advocating against COVID-19 mandates, same-sex marriage and transgender women participating in female sports.
She was one of 13 commissioners who gathered on Monday to hear testimony from members of the Jewish community on their experiences of antisemitism, for a report for U.S. President Donald Trump on promoting religious liberty.
She sported a Palestinian flag pin and harshly pushed back against a witness asking, "since we've mentioned Israel a total of 17 times, are you willing to condemn what Israel has done in Gaza?" She then continued to push for witnesses to condemn Israel on the record despite other commissioners asking her to drop the matter.
Boller, who converted to Catholicism last year, further claimed, "Catholics do not embrace Zionism, just so you know. So are all Catholics antisemites?" Her claim is a gross overstatement that does not reflect the fact that many Catholics are supportive of Zionism.
"I want to be clear on what the definition of antisemitism is," she continued. "If I don't support the political State of Israel, am I an antisemite, yes or no?"

She further vociferously defended Candace Owens, a conservative commentator known for spreading antisemitic conspiracy theories. "I haven't heard one thing out of her mouth that I would say is antisemitic," Boller said. "She's not an antisemite. She just doesn't support Zionism, and that really has to stop."
In the days since the hearing, Boller faced sharp criticism from right-wing pro-Israel media outlets like the Wall Street Journal and the Miriam Adelson-owned Hebrew daily Israel Hayom. She faced calls to resign from the committee from prominent right-wing activists and commentators, including Shabbos Kestenbaum, who was a witness at the commission, Laura Loomer and Commentary Editor John Podhoretz.
"Carrie Prejean Boller is one of the most disgusting people on Earth. She disgraces her faith, and shames herself, and may she grow like an onion with her head in the ground," Podhoretz posted on X.
Prominent Palestinian pastor Munther Isaac, one of the leading voices promoted by the Christian right critical of Israel, said he was "deeply grateful for [Boller's] courage" and that "she refused to accept the imposed rules and refused to allow Palestinian suffering to be erased."
Boller, for her part, refused calls to resign from the commission, noting this would be "the opposite of religious freedom" and that she "will not be bullied for following my Catholic conscience."
Following the announcement of Boller's removal, Owens came to her defense, posting on X, "Carrie didn't hijack anything. You hosted a performative Zionist hearing meant to neuter the Christian faith. Carrie spoke truth, as a Catholic, and Christians, the Truth cannot be defeated. Zionists are naturally hostile to Catholics because we refuse to bend the knee to revisionist history and support the mass slaughter and rape of innocent children for occult Baal worshipers."
As the government attempts to present itself as a leader in the fight against antisemitism, the incident puts GOP members' varying views on the issue and their infighting over it, at the forefront of the political debate once again.
