As Israel continues its slaughter, Canadian Zionist groups and politicians are defending a fascist Israeli politician. Itamar Ben-Gvir publishes photos of himself torturing activists and wears a pin celebrating hanging Palestinians, but some Canadians claim activists shouldn’t hang an effigy of the murderous fanatic because he’s Jewish.
On Sunday a Montreal 4 Palestine march included effigies of a handful of political leaders. A photo circulating shows Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu and Itamar Ben Gvir all lined up together in a mock hanging. But Rebel News videographer Guillaume Roy circulated a somewhat hard to make-out video with only the Ben-Gvir effigy, which has his trademark large white kippah, under the tagline “The pro-Hamas group Mtl4Palestine displays the [Montreal] Canadiens flag next to what appears to be an effigy of a Jew wearing a kippah, hanged with a rope.”
Several local Zionist politicians like National Post columnist Leslie Roberts shared it suggesting some type of criminality. Liberal MP Anthony Housefather quote tweeted Roy noting, “hanging an image of a Jew wearing a kippah in effigy is disgusting, antisemitic, and a clear incitement to hatred.” Conservatives Melissa Lantsman and Pierre Poilievre as well as Liberals Evan Solomon, Gary Anandasangaree and Leslie Church all echoed the defence of Ben-Gvir who has been sanctioned by Ottawa for his extreme right wing actions and words.
A few days ago the Israeli National Security Minister posted footage to social media of him mocking activists being tortured after being illegally detained in international waters in a bid to break the genocidal blockade of Gaza. Three weeks ago Ben-Gvir celebrated his 50th birthday with a cake ‘decorated’ by a death penalty noose in reference to a new death penalty law for Palestinian detainees. Decades ago he was blocked from joining the Israeli military because of his violent extremism.
But protesters in Montreal shouldn’t hang Ben-Gvir in effigy, say these Israel supporters. Inciting hatred of Ben-Gvir is a moral baseline.
In response to the manufactured hysteria Max Sylverman aptly explained:
“A psychotic fascist with tremendous power in his government advocates (and eventually adopts a law permitting) summary execution for Palestinians and parades around with a lapel pin of a noose and a big ostentatious white kippa on his head.
“Relatives of those who may face such illegal, immoral, and wanton murder by the state protest with an effigy of the hanging-advocate, himself in the noose this time.
“Anyone who has seen a picture of the cabinet minister and also the effigy immediately can draw the connection and see the characteristic signs of the representation of Ben Gvir, namely the noose lapel pin and the ostentatious white kippa. Plus they literally printed a picture of his face and put it on the effigy.
“Psychopaths here in Canada claim such protesters were in fact walking around with a generic effigy of a Jewish person hanging from a noose, claiming this is advocacy for hanging Jews.
“As opposed to the guy actually advocating hanging people and celebrating it with a noose lapel pin.
“This may be peak ‘Every accusation is a confession’ but I don’t know that it will make a difference.”
Israel killed 31 in Lebanon and six in Gaza Tuesday. At the same time a coterie of Zionist lobbyists and politicians, who demonstrate no concern at all for Palestinian, Lebanese or Iranian lives, were whipping up a frenzy about a cardboard depicting the hanging of Itamar Ben-Gvir. Their lies, obfuscations and extreme dishonesty demonstrate why the meaning of the term “antisemitism” has been destroyed. Everyone engaged in this shameful, racist charade should never again be believed or trusted to even care about the truth.
