“The lecture on Gaza was not easy. The room was tense. People struggled to accept the reality we described.”
Last week we gave a series of lectures at the Limmud conference in Birmingham, the UK. Limmud is one of the most significant annual events in Jewish education. We talked about our military service and personal stories, the two legal systems existing in the West Bank, and the IDF’s doctrine of disproportionate destruction used in Gaza, the Dahiya Doctrine.
“People found it hard to believe that the Dahiya Doctrine was real, but we did not invent it”, said Inbal Morag, our education coordinator. It is a doctrine formulated by Gadi Eizenkot, former Chief of General Staff. Its objective is to impose disproportionate violence and destruction on civilian infrastructure to “buy time” before the next round of fighting. This policy traps us in an ever-amplifying cycle of violence.
Education is an integral part of our theory of change. That’s why we will not stop speaking out against the occupation: in Israel and abroad. The instinct within the Jewish diaspora is often to side with the Israeli policy. However, there cannot be a peaceful and prosperous future for Israel unless the occupation is abolished.
Thanks to New Israel Fund UK and Limmud for having us! Special thanks to Yachad it would not have happened without your support!
