The original release of Liberation received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its setting and protagonist, but disliked the narrative's execution and certain aspects of the gameplay, while feeling that the title was limited by its status as a spin-off. A fully remade version of the game, titled Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD, was released in January 2014 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows via the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Steam, respectively.[1][11] A remastered version of Liberation HD was released as part of Assassin's Creed III Remastered for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows, and the Nintendo Switch in 2019.

The multiplayer component, exclusive to the original PlayStation Vita version, consists of players tapping nodes on a map, using characters (represented with static portraits) to capture bases and collect supplies, among other things. This differs from the series usual competitive multiplayer which had players assassinating each other for sport.

In 1768, Aveline's mentor Agaté orders her to assassinate Antonio de Ulloa, Louisiana's new Spanish governor and a Templar, who has been imposing strict trading restrictions, setting up a covert slave-trading operation, and allowing French officials to continue operating in the city. As Ulloa attempts to flee New Orleans admist a rebellion against his regime, Aveline attacks him, but spares his life upon learning the slaves sent out of the city were assigned to a Templar excavation site in Chichén Itzá.

In 1771, following Aveline's return to New Orleans, her friend and fellow Assassin Gérald Blanc informs her of a Templar named Diego Vázquez who has been attempting to take control of the Louisiana bayou. Learning that Agaté is in danger, Aveline goes to warn and protect him. A year later, she returns to Chichén Itzá, where she reunites with Jeanne and forgives her for her abandonment. After helping Aveline recover the second half of the Prophecy Disk, Jeanne stays behind to protect the area from further Templar incursions. In 1776, Aveline returns to New Orleans and commits herself to liberating slaves. When Madeleine learns of her stepdaughter's work, she asks her to help a former slave, George Davidson, escape to the north so that he may join the Continental Army. During this time, Aveline assassinates Vázquez, but learns that he is not the Company Man as she assumed, while her father Philippe mysteriously falls ill and dies.

1775, the American Colonies are about to revolt. As Connor, a Native American Assassin, secure liberty for your people and your nation. From bustling city streets to the chaotic battlefields, assassinate your foes in a variety of deadly ways with a vast array of weaponry.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation took place in Louisiana near the end of the French and Indian War, where France's defeat resulted in the city of New Orleans being taken over by the Spanish government. The citizens were upset over the transition from French to Spanish control and Spain's new occupation within the city. However, in 1765, the French governor Jean-Jacques Blaise d'Abbadie formed a negotiation with Templar Rafael Joaquín de Ferrer to remain as governor of New Orleans. This plot was later uncovered by the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, who infiltrated the governor's mansion and assassinated him.

Following this, de Ferrer made another deal with a man named Baptiste, who was hoping to defect from the Assassins to the Templar Order. Baptiste took on the identity of the recently deceased François Mackandal, as a ruse to attract followers to his cause. His plan was to poison New Orleans' nobles and take control of smuggling operations within the Louisiana Bayou, although his sole purpose was actually to force Agaté, Assassin and mentor to Aveline, out of hiding in the bayou. His plot failed however, as Aveline tracked Baptiste down, killed his followers and assassinated the false Mackandal.

Subsequently, Agaté ordered Aveline to assassinate de Ulloa to eradicate Templar presence in New Orleans. Aveline ambushed de Ulloa's carriage and confronted the governor, who told her that slaves had been taken to Chichén Itzá. However, Aveline spared his life and let de Ulloa leave the city, in return for a lens used to decode Templar documents and a map leading her to the Templar worksite in Chichén Itzá. Aveline's act of mercy destroyed any trust Agaté had in his student, as she had disobeyed his explicit orders.

After returning to the city, Aveline dressed herself as a lady and attended a governor's ball, in the hopes that Vázquez himself would be there. Upon speaking with several guests, she located Vázquez and asked him to dance. Using her charm, Aveline lured him to quiet corner and assassinated him. However, to her surprise, Vázquez revealed that he was not the Company Man. Following this, Aveline learned that her father, who had been ill for some time, had passed away.

However, she could not make sense of the scrambled messages within and became frustrated, giving Aveline the perfect moment to strike. She successfully eliminated all of the Templars inside the cathedral and assassinated Madeleine, reclaiming the Prophecy Disk.

Assassin's Creed III Remastered will launch on March 29, re-igniting Connor's revolution on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Featuring a new graphics engine, along with enhancements that include higher-resolution textures and support for 4K and HDR, the remastered edition also packs in improvements to Assassin's Creed III's ergonomics and gameplay mechanics.

The other potential customers for this remastered Switch port are fans of the series. Many of these people probably played AC III on its first release, and don't want to relive the experience. Those who do want to give it another chance with all the updates should get it on PS4, Xbox One, or PC. Those more powerful platforms will better showcase the "remastered" part of the game.

Of course, the key question is straightforward enough: to what extent has the game actually been remastered? Ubisoft's PR describes 'enhanced graphics with improved environment rendering, upscaled shadow resolution, denser crowds and more'. Certainly, after playing the opening hours on PS4, Xbox One, and the two enhanced consoles, it's true that it's not a simple res bump. Let's not forget that Rogue has close ties to Black Flag, a cross-gen game that did receive PS4 and Xbox One upgrades - all of which are present and correct in this Rogue remaster.

Many of the remaster's other upgrades already exist in Assassin's Creed Rogue's current PC version. It follows that compared to Xbox 360, you get massively upgraded smoke and particle effects which fall in line with PC's top settings version. On top of that, texture quality is improved, giving all remastered editions the same resolution maps as PC's max preset, again setting it apart from last-gen consoles. Remarkably, bearing in mind their vintage, the textures hold up surprisingly well, even when running at 4K on the enhanced consoles.

@TAndvig OK I see what you mean now. But I would say in response to that, is if you do find yourself under-leveled in the game, there are plenty of ways to level up while still role-playing as a stealthy assassin. You are right though, in order to make efficient progress, it is best to engage in fighting and hunting as well. The game encourages you to play it as an action-rpg.

Comparing handheld and last gen versions: Skyrim runs a near clean 30 with many of the textures and some of the lighting of the remastered version with roughly the same res. Dark Souls runs at a slightly higher res and more than doubles the framerate in some places (hello Blighttown). Dark Souls also got most of the multiplayer improvements. Darksiders in quality mode actually holds 30 without screentearing with a higher res AND uses much of the visual feature set of its PS4/X1 counterparts. In performance mode it comes close to a locked 60 and STILL looks better than the older versions...actually I would argue that Darksiders is probably the single best last gen Switch port.

This is a full fledged Assasins creed open world on portable hardware with remastered cutscene visuals plus an added game thrown in. Theres a few niggles with audio but thats minor compared to what your getting . Reviewer has no idea whats been accomplished here

One thing I do think that Ubisoft should have done differently is drop the word "remastered" from the title of this game, and maybe gone with something like "Assassin's Creed 3 Collection" or "Anthology" or something to that effect. I don't know, this is just my thought on the subject.

This was the game that got me into the assassins creed series. I absolutely loved this game. Sure black flag as well as origins was cool. I have no idea why everyone had a hard on for ezio. I found him trying to hard to be cool but each to their own. I might buy this later on down the road for a long trip.

Fast forward six years and Ubisoft has just released a remastered version of Assassin's Creed 3, which comes bundled with all the DLC and Liberation, a spin-off set in New Orleans that was originally released for the PlayStation Portable. Yes, really. It's a hefty package, but does it fix any of the problems that blighted the original release? Well, some of them, a little. But for the most part the game's many issues are so deeply ingrained that no amount of remastering, short of a total Resident Evil 2-style remake, could fix them.

The most important change is to the stealth. You can now whistle to lure enemies while hiding in bushes, and take down two at once with a swift double assassination. Small changes, really, but the result is a game that is generally less frustrating. Some mission objectives have been adjusted to be less punishing also: evidence that this is more than just the same game upscaled.

Experience Assassin's Creed for the first time on Nintendo Switch with Assassin's Creed III Remastered, now enhanced with HD rumble, touch screen and handheld mode features. Also includes Assassin's Creed Liberation remastered and all solo DLC content.
