Hey everyone!

Really glad to see a group devoted to such an enlightening book. I
myself am reading it, but I want to use drscheme as my editor rather
than edwin or mit scheme (which is funny because at MIT they don't even
use mit scheme for the main scheme programming class [SICP] anymore,
they use drscheme).

I'm using an Ubuntu (Debian) Linux machine and when I type
/usr/local/bin/mechanics the command goes through and then nothing
happens and I'm back at my command prompt. No errors, no memory
overflows, just nothing. I imagine it's becuse I don't have edwin but
who knows?

Any help/suggestions?

I would definitely be interested in seeing scmutils ported to DrScheme,
because doing do would expose a lot more of the inner workings of the
scmutils system. I don't have any idea what would be involved in this,
except to note that the full source seems to be available (in the 'src'
subdirectory).

It looks like this was recently asked on the plt-scheme mailing list:

I experience the same symptoms ('mechanics' immediately and silently
returns) when using either of the 'Woody' or 'Sarge' variants of the
2005-11-21 distribution of scmutils. However, the 2005-11-04 version
works for me. I'm using Debian of some form, kernel 2.4.27-2-386. You
can find the various versions of scmutils here:

ftp://swiss-ftp.ai.mit.edu/pub/users/gjs/

Installation consists of simply 'tar -zxvf'ing the tar.gz into /usr/local.

However, starting up edwin with this version (tarball dated 2005-11-04)
says "Image saved on Sunday September 26, 2004 at 11:07:54 AM." Those
dates don't quite agree.
