Report: Nolan Ryan Hospitalized in Round Rock
Friday, 26 Jan 2007
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was admitted to a hospital in Round
Rock on Friday after experiencing chest pains.
Ryan's son, Reid Ryan, told FOX 26's Mark Berman that the incident is
related to previous heart problems. The elder Ryan, who pitched for the
Houston Astros from 1980-88 during a 27-year major league career, had
surgery to clear a blockage in his heart in April of 2000.
"This happened because of the pre-existing heart condition that he
has," Reid Ryan, President and CEO of Ryan/Sanders Baseball which owns
the Round Rock Express and the Corpus Christi Hooks said. "He calls
them episodes. It's a pain in his chest, like a spasm.
"What he does is whenever he has one of these, it is standard operating
procedure for him to go the hospital. He takes the medicine they give
which is a patch that releases nitrate at a slow rate. It is 100
percent precautionary. They ran an EKG on him and it was clean."
The Greeley Tribune in Colorado reported Ryan was scheduled to speak at
an event in Greeley, Colo., Friday morning but that his appearance was
canceled after he reportedly checked into the Round Rock hospital.
"He will have this kind of problem the rest of his life," Reid said.
"So when he is in the hospital, it's good to gather as much information
as possible.
"He's fine. I talked to him on the phone. He's doing good.
"We have been through this enough. He's had several of these episodes.
We are all concerned but we know what we are dealing with. The standard
mo for him is he is in the hospital for a day. They let him go home the
next day."
