The Yakuza series is considered by many to be one of the most engrossing and coolest video game franchises of all time. These games feature everything that one would want in a mainstream title, with everything from the story to the gameplay being phenomenal. Now, in recent times, players also have the perfect starting point that they can jump into the series with in the form of Yakuza 0.
This game serves as a prequel to the events of the Yakuza series and sets up both Kiryu and Majima as budding Yakuza members who end up embroiled in controversial situations of their own. The manner in which this prequel serves up a delicious story without compromising on the established lore of the series certainly deserves to be commended. Players who want to check out Yakuza 0 can download the following mods to further enhance their experience.
Updated on December 15, 2021, by Ritwik Mitra: Yakuza 0 is one of the best games in the series and a great starting point for anyone who wishes to get into this weird and endearing series. The game's narrative is amazing and highly enjoyable, with the combat also being quite incredible in its own right. That being said, PC gamers can improve their enjoyment of this game even further with the use of mods for this game. The best ones of the lot are mentioned below.
Sega is definitely a legendary company in the realm of gaming, there's no doubt about that. That being said, their logo and sound can get really irritating for players who are booting up Yakuza 0 time and time again.
With this mod, players can finally get through the Sega splash screen without being shocked by its loud sound over and over again. It's a small mod but does wonders when it comes to improving the overall experience of playing this game over an extended period of time.
Given that Yakuza 0 is a prequel that takes place quite a few years back, it makes sense that Majima looks nothing like his modern version. However, players who miss the new and improved Majima can get him back in the game with this mod.
Playing as a modern version of Majima during a prequel is a novel accomplishment that could only be possible through the use of mods. PC players would definitely get a kick out of controlling Majima in his classic attire.
This is where the Komaki Restoration mod comes into the picture. It adds a bunch of Komaki's moves for Kiryu to play around with, along with a whole host of other small changes to bring back the familiar Dragon style everyone knows and loves.
While Kiryu's look in the prequel is definitely quite striking in its own right, it might not be something that long-time fans of the series are all that comfortable with. With this mod, the iconic suit of the Dragon of Dojima can make its way into the prequel as well!
The goofiest mod on this list is definitely a body swap that introduces CJ from San Andreas into the game. It's a ludicrous swap... but for some reason, it's also one of the most popular mods for the game.
The sheer amount of meme potential that's enabled with this mod is beyond compare. It might lose its novelty over time, but playing as CJ in Yakuza 0 is still a treat and takes some of the sting away from the horrible Definitive Edition that was recently launched.
Here's where this texture mod comes into the picture. It lifts the high-resolution character textures used in cutscenes and adds them to the main game, allowing for the main characters of the game to look slightly better during gameplay.
Most Yakuza games face a problem where the music that has been licensed for use in Japan ends up being removed from Western releases. It might not be the biggest change, but it can still get on the nerve of some players.
Thankfully, modders are here to save the day. The Yakuza 0 Licensed Music Restoration Patch restores the songs "Bubble" and "Kurenai" by the Japanese band "Shōnan no Kaze" for use in the intro cutscene, a cutscene early in the game, and the end credits.
Completion Points are a great way to motivate players to explore the substories, side content, and minigames of Yakuza 0. However, not all the side content in the game is all that riveting, which makes it slightly annoying that so many Completion Points are locked behind these mundane activities.
This mod is a godsend in that regard. It registers all the annoying CP activities such as mahjong, poker, and the like as complete for the player. Suffice to say, the player will definitely put this bonus CP to good use.
The secret fighting styles in the game are quite a blast to use in battle. However, one annoying thing about using these styles is that the player needs to open the menu if they wish to use these styles in the middle of combat.
Thankfully, with this mod, this annoyance will become a thing of the past. Now, players will be able to access both the Dragon of Dojima and the Mad Dog of Shimano styles with a simple press of the right stick.
Players who want a relatively new experience while playing Yakuza 0 should definitely try this mod out. It changes up several things in the game that helps players revisit this title to try out Yakuza 0 with what is essentially a fresh coat of paint.
Side activities in this game are changed massively so that the player doesn't have to spend too much time on them. Along with this, this mod also nerfs some overpowered combat styles, increases the health of almost every enemy, and adds unique upgrade paths to the secret fighting styles as well, among a host of other minor changes!
Yakuza 4 was the first game in the series that featured multiple protagonists, which ended up being a very welcome change indeed. Out of these protagonists, most people absolutely adored the movesets of both Shun Akiyama and Taiga Saejima.
This mod aims to bring the combat styles of both characters back into the fold. Kiryu's Rush and Beast styles end up getting sacrificed to accommodate for these styles... although most people wouldn't really have a problem with that if they've already played through the game once.
Players who might be bored of the Heat Actions in Yakuza 0 will find this mod to be perfect for them. It alters almost a hundred Heat Actions present in the game, which makes combat feel extremely fresh and engaging.
Most of the Heat Action changes affect Majima, whose moves are directly lifted from that of Yagami's in Judgment. Along with this, the QTEs of most bosses have also been altered while Heat Actions using weapons are also changed significantly.
One of the simpler mods on this list does exactly what is stated in its name. Players who wanted the intro video of Yakuza 0 to run on the same framerate as the rest of the game need only download this mod.
You know how Kiryu, protagonist of Yakuza 0, is super strong and can throw people at other people and generally deliver an unspeakable beatdown on all those he encounters? You know who else can do that? Superhuman Spartan John-117, the Master Chief, protagonist of the Halo series.
Now, one modder whose favorite two video game series are Halo and Yakuza has given us a mod that swaps one for the other and honestly it's not that weird and kind of works. Videos of the work in action on both YouTube and Twitter
Modder Kashiiera warns that the models aren't rigged with similar armature, so there's bound to be stretching and warping and misaligned body parts. However, seeing as you're the kind of person who's going to download a mod to put Master Chief from Halo into Yakuza 0 as the protagonist I have a feeling you're comfortable with a bit of jank.
You can download the Yakuza 0 - Masterchief from Halo 3 Mod at Nexusmods. So go out and let the Master Chief get some R&R at Karaoke or pachinko or whatever else. You can also find the modder, Kashiiera, on YouTube, Twitter, and Patreon.
In the below table, Archive refers to a game-specific mod that requires the user to manually download, install, and update the mod. SKIM refers to a game-specific mod which supports automatic installation through the Special K Install Manager as well as auto-updates post-install.
This is a list of all Special K based standalone game mods which are not recommended and should not be used any longer. It is instead recommended to use the latest versions of Special K through a regular Local or Global install.
The Yakuza series is full to the brim with some of the most powerful narrative experiences around, fuelled by a populated open-world with so many things to do that players can sink hours into the game without even going forward with the main story! This is the major draw of Yakuza games, and now the barrier to entry for this series has also been taken away with the remake of the first Yakuza title.
Yakuza Kiwami is a great game that sells itself as a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Sure, there are way more things to try out in the games as well, but the core story of the game is left virtually intact. In fact, PC players can enjoy the added benefit of mods to improve their experience even more. Keeping this in mind, here are some of the best mods that players can download for Yakuza Kiwami.
Players have obviously noticed that the textures of characters in the game look completely different from the in-game cutscenes. This is a conscious decision made by the developers to heighten the quality of these cutscenes.
However, players who don't want to make any compromises in this regard can opt for this texture mod that replaces all cutscenes with their high-quality variant. The change is very much noticeable throughout the game and makes for a better experience from a visual perspective.
