Amazon is the world's largest online retailer. It has more than two million books in print, and most of these are available for purchase as eBooks. In addition, Amazon also allows authors to self-publish their own books through its Kindle Direct Publishing platform. If you want to publish an eBook but aren't sure what to write about or how much money you can make from it, here are seven ideas that could help you make money by publishing on Amazon:
Children's books are a great option for authors who want to make money on the Amazon platform. There is a large market for children's books, and it has been growing steadily over the years. The best part about this topic is that it has a long shelf life--once you publish your book and start promoting it, you can continue making sales for years after its release.
There are also low levels of competition in this genre because many people do not know how lucrative writing and publishing eBooks can be as an author-publisher (AP). This means that there are fewer competitors selling similar products which gives you more chances at success.
Additionally, since creating content related to children requires little effort compared with other topics such as self-help or memoirs--you'll find yourself spending less time editing before publishing so there will be less financial risk involved when choosing this topic over others out there right now!
Self-help and personal development books are a popular category on Amazon. These books can be written by anyone, with little to no experience in the field of psychology or counseling. In fact, many people who write these types of books use their own life experiences as examples in their writing (which will help them market more effectively).
There are also many different subcategories within self help and personal development: weight loss, relationships, anxiety disorders, depression--the list goes on! It's easy to find your niche within this broad category so long as you have some kind of experience dealing with whatever topic you choose to write about
The most popular type of short story is fiction, but nonfiction and poetry have their place on Amazon as well too. The trick is finding topics that appeal to readers in your niche--and if you do it right, then writing a book about them will be simple!
This genre can be very lucrative because there's such a high demand for it on Amazon that many authors are able to make six figures a year just by writing books in this category. You don't have to write literary masterpieces either--just make sure that your story is engaging enough that readers keep turning pages until they reach the end (or want more).
If you're looking for a hot topic, look no further. Cooking and food books are some of the most profitable topics on Amazon right now. People love cooking, eating, and learning about new recipes. The foodie culture has been growing in recent years, with more people interested in trying new things at home rather than going out as much (especially millennials).
This means that sales for these types of books can be expected to continue increasing at a rapid rate as more people want to learn about different types of cuisine or expand their knowledge base on how to cook certain dishes better.
As you can see, there are many reasons why Amazon is such a great place to sell books. And if you follow the steps I've outlined above, it will only be a matter of time before your book sales start growing.
Writing ebooks (or to be more accurate, selling ebooks) is a great way to establish a passive income stream. And if your aim is to earn money it helps to be in tune with the ebook topics people most want to read. So what are the most popular ebook topic ideas in 2024?
Learning how to work productively from home without the discipline of an office routine is a new experience for many. So too is the idea of having free time when you find yourself liberated from the the slog of the daily commute. Plenty of trending ebook ideas in there.
Readers always want to learn how to accomplish something. Writing an ebook that teaches a particular skill, technique, or technology could win you a lot of customers. Popular how tos include photography, career guides, parenting tips, study guides, and more.
Self-Help is a huge genre, covering areas like time management, personal development, mental and physical health, and more. Some ebooks will focus on an audience at a particular life stage, like busy parents, students, retirees, or overworked employees. Other ebooks stand out through their tone and style, perhaps with a humorous, forthright, or insightful way of approaching their topic.
Fiction ebooks exploded in popularity with the advent of the Kindle in 2007. With many novels and short story collections available for just a couple of dollars, or even for free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, some self-publishing authors are making millions from fiction ebooks.
Want to write for children? Ebooks could be a great option. While very young kids may still mainly enjoy physical picture books with pages to turn, middle-grade readers and teens are increasingly turning to fiction and non fiction ebooks on phones, tablets, or ebook readers. This is a great market to get into if you want to write a series and have a good sense of what kids love.
With a growing interest in non-traditional medicine over the past couple of decades, ebooks dealing with natural remedies are often strong sellers. You could consider topics like homeopathy, herbal cures, or even radical lifestyle adjustments (like cold-water swimming) in this niche.
The climate crisis has become an increasing concern for many of us over the past few years. More and more people are taking a personal interest in living a more sustainable lifestyle and reducing their carbon footprint. Ebooks dealing with these topics in a practical, positive way could be very popular. You could also write an ebook that digs into the bigger issues around sustainability and carbon-reduction or that discusses specific case studies.
In the work from home category people want ebook topics that will help them be more productive. They also want to know about how to earn secondary incomes from blogging, affiliate marketing, selling and, of course, writing ebooks.
Hey Ayesha! Even if a topic has been discussed before, I think your unique perspective still can add great value for your readers. ? Plus, you can also use the comments section to see what people are most interested about.
There are numerous benefits of doing this but one of the key ones for me is that it shows whether people pay for that type of information and to see what kind formats of products seem to be doing well.
If there are a lot of products on your topic you have some proof of concept but you also might well have a challenge on your hands too as the market might be cluttered. If this is the case it might be worth doing some deeper analysis of the competition.
The key with both approaches is to watch the reaction of others to your posts. Are they being read? Are people excited by them? Do the posts actually bring about some kind of benefit to your readers? If there are sparks of energy being created you should follow that energy and keep working.
Similarly you might like to run a webinar (or series of them) on your idea. This potentially has the same benefits as the three mentioned in the podcasts section above but has the added bonus of opening up potential for a live interaction and feedback from those listening in.
The questions and responses you get during a webinar are often incredibly insightful and open up areas that you could develop in your product as well as helping you to see how people react against your ideas (which could be stumbling blocks for the to buy your product).
The other benefit of doing webinars before you create your product is that you get your audience used to attending them which can be useful when it comes time to launch your product. Live webinars often work really well as a selling tool during a launch.
By pre-selling their product they had proof of concept before or during the product creation. It also gave them more incentive/accountability to actually finish the product (as people had already paid).
Another blogger involved those who bought the pre-launched product in the creation of it by inviting then to a private VIP Facebook group to discuss what they wanted included and to build some community among buyers. He also gave the access to the product in stages (it was a course so he could release lessons regularly over the weeks after they made the purchase.
Hey Darren good post and really relevant to point out that people and business should test to see if there is a demand for a product, ebook or course before diving head first into the creation process. Magazines.com together with Dummies.com are great places to check out what is currently trending. I like to research these sites and they have done all the hard work and dollars in the market research. Google keyword tool should also be used to check out keyword research. No point in investing time and money on a product or course no body is interested in. Again thanks for the tips. Cheers Kim
Thanks Darrin.
I really like the idea of making sure that the reader is able to get something of tangible value from their purchase. One of the ways I believe this to be possible is, as you said, to make sure the idea is important to you, the writer.
Very insightful article by the way, always be diligent on the idea research and market before putting a big arse amount of effort creating a digital product just to test it out, test on similar products as affiliate and see the market to get experience, then you later develop your own.
