Hi Everyone,
I'm Joelle Gamble. I'm originally from California but I work in NYC now and live in Jersey City. I'm the Deputy Field Director for the Roosevelt Institute | Campus Network, a national policy organization that engages students in policy research, publication and implementation. We're housed in the Roosevelt Institute, as a whole, which is an economic public policy think tank.
I'm new to the East Coast, I moved out here almost a year ago after getting my B.A. in International Development Studies from UCLA.
Quick question: Do you have examples of past charters? I think that would be a helpful guide for us. Or, @Stephanie, do you have your group's charter from last year? Unless, we are not supposed to look at other charters? :)
Hello All!
I'll be short! I went to school for 'International Development' and 'Globalization, Development, and Human RIghts' @ Arcadia University. I am currently working in Central New Jersey (not far from where I grew up) on Hurricaine Sandy Recovery projects- There's a lot to keep me busy. I'm on a town's economic advisory board, am doing work for a civil engineering company, am consulting several small local start up businesses, and am a search and rescue SCUBA diver here. I'm planning on moving to the Republic of Armenia after this summer to work for an Economic Development Organization run by the PM there-and am dreading the language barrier... In my recent down-time, I've been brewing beer and playing the piano.
My schedule is all over the place. I'll make myself available to meet though- As soon as everyone else figures out a day and time, let me know when and I'll make it happen. I look forward to meeting each of you!
Hello Social Innovation Fellows!
My name is Magen Jennings. I am originally from the US Virgin Islands and I went to school in Connecticut, USA to study biology. I am currently working on a Swing dance documentary and I am looking for a career that will intersect social enterprise with visual storytelling. I became a fellow earlier this year at LA '13 and had such a good time that I signed up to be a mentor. I thoroughly enjoyed the Social Innovation Competition and it was a great opportunity to learn about many facets of a problem in LA county. I look forward in getting to know you before and during the institute.
Hi Team!
Looking forward to getting to know you all! A little bit about myself:
I'm from Ohio, and went to the Ohio State University for undergrad, graduating in 2010. I lived in Beirut, Lebanon as a Rotary Scholar from 2010-2011. After returning to the US, I taught in NE DC as a TFA corps member for a year, and then started my current job. This fall I'll be starting as a first year part-time law student at Georgetown while continuing to work at my current job at Advisory Board Company. I love to dance, and perform with a couple South Asian performing arts companies in the DC area.
Side note: My full name is spelled: Noorjahan Rahman (it's not spelled correctly in our last email from Lora, just in case you try to find me on LinkedIn, etc.). And I go by Noor.
Thanks!
Noor
Hi everyone!
The basics:
From SF, work in Portland (anyone else nearby?), currently do Marketing, never been to NY, would prefer Thursday Night (pst) after 6pm phone calls. :)
My Secret:
I've done all this before. I was in the NY '12 class, but the DAY I was supposed to get on the plane, I had a terrible illness (allergic reaction shut me down) and had to cancel. So I've literally been through all this before. This year, I'm a little more crushed for time (started a new job, did a big move etc) so, although I have experience, I won't be able to truly take a lead role but, I'll have some good resources and, if it's allowed (Magen?) I can share examples and things from what we did last year. Competitive advantage? Oh yes!
Biographical Word Cloud of Fun:
California girl. Half-British, Half-Nebraskan. Honors History/Spanish Lit B.A. from UC San Diego. Thesis was published in 2010. Studied, lived and worked in England for a bit (got to present some of my work to the Prime Minister in 2009). Got my TEFL from UC Berkeley. Americorps Vista in 2010 working at Portland State University's Business Outreach Program. Worked at the Rotary Club of Portland doing marketing/events/membership. Co-founded a tech startup company that humbly folded after 9 months (so much learning tho!). Now I'm the Marketing Associate for one of Oregon's top 10 non-profits, Albertina Kerr. Side Hustles: a book, a low tech silly tumblr thing, gardening and an event series/networking thing called Pitch Pong. I had an arm injury when I was born, did 13 years of weekly physical therapy and now basically function normally. I eventually want to return to the Bay Area. I'm a believer in social enterprise and design thinking- specifically as tools to help people make an impact on the world's issues. I love building community/connections and get a kick out of hooking people up with ideas, people and tools that can fulfill their passions. I communicate best visually or writing things down and love puns. Oh, and I can wiggle my nose like Samantha in Bewitched and I've been shoved by both Oprah and Orlando Bloom's bodyguards (both times, not my fault!).
Yay Team!
- Stephanie
