A loose cannon is defined as "a dangerously uncontrollable person or thing." It is a phrase that comes up often during election cycles, as candidates try to paint each other as rash and impulsive decision-makers.

The current election cycle has been no exception. In May, after Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination for President, Hillary Clinton remarked that "an unqualified loose cannon is within reach of the most powerful job in the world."

Shortly after ascending to the presidency, Roosevelt began to worry about his legacy. Knowing that he would be only fifty-one years old after two terms, and perhaps with a lot of energy left to burn, Roosevelt lamented with candor to his friend, the journalist William Allan White, that he "[didn't] want to be the old cannon loose on the deck in the storm."

Our earliest recorded use of the phrase loose cannon to mean "a dangerously uncontrollable person or thing" dates to 1973, in a memo sent to President Richard Nixon (later shared in Nixon's memoirs).

I don't want you to think, counsel, that I went about this all on my own. I realize there's a lot of folks around that think there's a loose cannon on the gun deck at the NSC. That wasn't what I heard when I worked there.

The notion of keeping information under wraps, of course, is critical not only to political strategy but military tactics and national security. So calling a political opponent a loose cannon connotes not only that the person is a rash decision-maker, but a security risk as well.

Playing a police investigator, he bums his eyes into the backs of suspects' skulls as if trying to see into their past lives. He has a restaurant tantrum, checklist item for an intense performance. (See James Woods, below.) The tall frosty mug here is Richard Gere, recovering from a failed career as a De Niro-Brando clone. Age has embossed him. In Internal Affairs his gray hair lends his face the silver contours of a Gil Kane cartoon. His philandering cop, Dennis Peck (short for pecker?), is more than evil. He's bad evil. He's bad-evil, evil-bad. Macho adversaries, competing stars, Garcia (loose before, tight now) and Gere (tight before, loose now) go crotch-to-crotch in a ballistic battle of the bulge. Internal Affairs isn't unaware of its homoerotic subcurrents and cross-trajectories. The perfect comment comes when Garcia's partner (Roseanne's Laurie Metcalf, downshifting superbly) says of their rivalry, "Why don't you just pull 'em out and I'll judge which one's bigger?"

Hundreds of years ago, cannons were often found on battleships. Sometimes a battle at sea with another warship or a storm would free them from their mounting. As you can imagine, a loose cannon rolling around could do serious damage to a ship and her crew.

Loose cannons, both the guns and people, are difficult to control. Their unpredictable behavior can cause problems for them and others. Family, friends, coworkers or larger groups, such as a sports team or political party can all be affected by a loose cannon.

Via an American Idol style competition, Nikki Limo and Lily Newhouse were chosen as the first PokerStars Big Game "loose cannons" in over a decade. As such, they will receive a $50,000 stake to compete in a high-stakes cash game against pros and entertaining recreational players.

Magnus was one of the original loose cannons when the popular show first aired in 2010-2011. She won over $60,000 on that day, her first introduction to televised poker. Stapleton and Hartigan will commentate on the show when it airs in 2024. Filming will take place at Resorts World this week, however.

On Monday morning, one by one, the 20 players faced the judges to be questioned and critiqued. Each participant was first given an opportunity to share who they are, their experience on the felt, and why they'd make for an appealing loose cannon. And there wasn't much sugarcoating going on with this panel.

Take, for example, a woman who told the judges she felt her appearance on the show would help to grow women in poker. But Magnus, who made it clear to the contestants that she's "brutally honest," disagreed, and didn't hold back when she informed the hopeful loose cannon that she didn't feel she'd do anything to grow poker.

Beloved by his men but viewed with suspicion by his superiors, he assuredly was not viewed as a member of the Good Old Boys club in the U.S. Navy. The latter's view was that Zacharias was too much the self-proclaimed intelligence "expert" who sometimes overstepped his bounds with predictable consequences. He made enemies because he was, on many occasions, right at the expense of his superiors. He had been unable to convince the brass of the impending Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during 1941; he was passed over for director of naval intelligence; his broadcasts to Japan were cut short; and he was not included in postwar intelligence operations. He failed to gain promotion to rear admiral while on active duty throughout World War II and was, instead, forced to retire. This is not surprising, since he was regarded as something of a loose cannon.
