Good Afternoon All.

I tend to ask the following interview questions, in addition to anything from the application that I was interested in having clarification about:

1.       What interests you the most about the SI Leader position?

1.       Based on your understanding of the SI Leader position, what differences do you see between the role of an SI Leader, as opposed to a Tutor or TA?

2.       How might attending class be benefit both to the SI Leader as well as for the enrolled students who see the Si Leader there each day?

3.       As someone who has performed well in the supported course, how might an SI Leader find ways to understand where/how students may struggle with course material?  How can the SI leader help to bridge any gaps/help the students to help themselves?

4.       We talk a lot about the awesome group study sessions, where students are helping each other.  If you were an SI Leader, how might you handle a study session where only one student has shown up without it feeling like a one on one tutoring session?  (For students who respond by saying they would skip the agenda and cover what the student wants support with I throw a curveball and ask them “What happens then, if another participants walks in half way through the session…. How would you change gears?”)

5.       As an SI Leader, what would be you approach in getting student to attend SI sessions- primarily for the first time?  (What marketing techniques would you use?)

6.       In addition to “helping students to help each other,” SI Leaders have administrative responsibilities as well.  Tell us a little about your time management style.  (i.e How you  might balance this additional course, study sessions, weekly training and time to partner with the SI Supervisor and faculty member for support?)

I hope you find these to be helpful.  In addition, I have included the SI Leader application and reapplication to this email as well.

Best of luck to you!

Wendy

Dear All,

Just a note, my mentors are responsible for observing a group of SI Leaders assigned to them, they are also required to keep in contact with each of the group members on a regular basis to find out how they are doing and if they can “mentor” them through any processes.  I schedule a “mentoring meeting” about once a month so they will meet and talk about issues and of course, share ideas.  The first semester I started using the mentoring groups, the attendance for Biology SI session quadrupled!

Usually, I know who I want to be a Mentor—just because it’s going to be the SI Leaders that are going above and beyond the average SI Leaders (they have some gift:  creative, awesome at advertising techniques, can lead others and get others to aspire to new heights, etc).  Also, while I’m figuring it out—it always helps to have an SI Leader presentation day!  That is my favorite training day!  (So if you don’t have money or time for an SI Leader presentation day, you might want to put that in the interview!)

I have been using this for the application questions for the Mentor positions:

How many long semesters have you been an SI Leader?

What have you learned from being an SI Leader?

How do you think that will help you in your future career?

Do you have 2 or 3 hours more per week to contribute to work above and beyond being an SI Leader?

How do you feel about mentoring and observing 5 or 6 SI Leaders?

How often do you think observations should occur for SI Leaders (new and veteran SI Leaders)?

What do you think qualifies you for this job?

What qualities do you think an Excellent SI Leader should possess?

What is your response to students that are unprepared during your SI sessions?

Do you think that some students are not cut out to be college students?  Why?

What advice would you give a new SI Leader?

How often should you talk to your professor?

How often do you currently talk to your SI supervisor?

What activities have you incorporated this semester to gain attendance in your sessions?

What activities have you incorporated in your sessions to get students involved in learning the material?

What was the most difficult item that you have encountered since you started being an SI Leader?

What is your anticipated graduation date?

For our study group leader interviews, I like to ask “Can you describe one learning situation where you have struggled and how you dealt with it.” Might also be a useful question for mentors. Since our leaders are all strong students I like to make sure they can empathize with students who are struggling (covered in question 4 below.) When a candidate has trouble thinking of any situation where they’ve struggled, I worry…
